i am not a good dog, i am not a good girl
because i'm not a dog, and not a girl at all
empty flesh, empty feelings, limpid, maybe frail
i'm not your dog, i want to be something more
can i be good enough when i know i'm not good
i don't like being chained outside or even inside
i always find myself with a collar on my neck
please don't upgrade me to a muzzle, i won't bite
i'm gonna be a good dog, i'll keep my paws clean
i'm gonna be a good girl, i promise i won't bark
but i'm so sick of crying, i'm so sick of whining
i'll never be a good enough dog for your home
i'll never be good enough, so bark doggy bark
i will never be good enough for you to praise
i just want to feel safe, be loved in your home

meaning: this poem touches on a few things all at once for me. for a majority of my life I have been the hyper funny friend, which i don't mind and i'm glad that i have been fun to be around. i do mind being treated like a pet though, which is how many of my friendships have gone. obviously since i'm so full of energy there's no way i could possibly have room for feelings and thoughts too!!! those friendships, not doing good in school/constant talks of disappointment with teachers, recent home life, and some past relationships have all given me this overwhelming feeling that i'm not enough. i find myself pushing myself past my limits to prove that i am enough to people, only to mess up something and feeling more worthless than before. this poem is just about that feeling of trying so hard to be enough only to feel like a dog chained outside.
