Chapter 71 :: Fast Approaching!

Start from the beginning

Lie.

"I did," the Inoue admitted. "I...well, Sasuke's always been a stubborn bastard, you know? I-if he uh...if he didn't listen to you, then who the hell is me, eh?" She laughed nervously, flicking a strand of stray hair to its original place as she looked away. "I'm...I'm sorry Sakura...really, I am."

Lies, lies, lies.

"What did he tell you?"

"...huh?"

"I'm not stupid, you know. He must've told you something. Sasuke is stubborn, that much is true, but he's not really the type to just...brush you off, at least not you of all people." Sakura forced a smile. "If anything, I have every right to believe you and him got into an argument just before he left. I'm pretty sure you'd be at each other's throats no matter the circumstances."

Oh, you couldn't be more wrong, Sakura my dear.

She swallowed. "Uh, well you know, the usual bullshit. He thinks I'm annoying and a waste of time, blah blah blah." She shrugged. "He's an asshole, I guess."

"Maybe," Sakura murmured, squinting her eyes at the girl. "But you didn't want him to leave, did you?"

"O-only because of you!!" Aya protested quickly. "I-I only intervened because he hurt you, ya know, a-and I don't like seeing you cry!" Not really a lie, but also not really a truth. "YOU'D miss him for sure, and maybe cousin what's-his-name, a-and Naruto, and Ino, but me?" She laughed. "As if! Sasuke can drop dead for all I care!"

Sakura hummed as she wiped her eyes, even though the tear stains were still present, and she breathed out a sigh, as if trying to calm her nerves. She exhaled and tilted her head in the girl's direction with a gentle smile.

"Really?" She asked, her voice soft. "Do you really think like that, Aya? You know, there's no one out here that's going to judge you, just admit how you feel. You may not love him in a romantic sense, but you certainly learned to love him, even if you don't wanna admit it."

Aya hesitated.

"You can cry. It'll be our little secret."

And she did. She cried and wailed, and Sakura was the only one willing to listen.

They see Naruto, and his retrieval squad at the village gates. Sakura stops them, and as intellectual as ever, Shikamaru politely denies her request of joining them on their mission. After all, if she couldn't stop him, then who's to say they would have the same luck?

Still―

"Aya, have...have you been crying?" Naruto frowned at his friend, and she sighed knowing that she couldn't lie to the blond. "Your...your eyes are really―"

"That's...none of your concern right now," she mumbled, ignoring the stares of the other boys. "It's just....I mean―"

"Relax, we'll try to get him back," Shikamaru drawled out. "You know, I expected a lot of things, but for you of all people to suddenly be upset at the fact that he's gone? Well, color me impressed. So it seems like you're not just stuck in Naruto's shadow."
