Self development is the process of learning new things and developing new skills—skills that improve our chances of success, achieving our goals, and manifesting our dreams. This is also about taking responsibility for one’s own personal and professional development. It’s an area which, in an age of CPD, PDP and lifelong learning, has become increasingly important to both individuals and organisations.
Self-improvement activities include those that increase a person’s potential and capabilities, create human capital, improve employability, improve quality of life, and help that person realize their goals and desires.
Striving for continuous self-development is one of the most rational and wise decisions you can make for yourself.
Some of the things we all want for ourselves are to improve the quality of our lives, to achieve more, to become better people, and to strive to be a better version of ourselves. That is why we establish personal development objectives in our lives. Here are some personal development goals example that will aid and augment your personal growth journey into a happier more confident you.
1. Embrace Empathy. Empathy is about objectively comprehending differing perspective which in turn provides a wealth of insight into your own perspective.
2. Confidence. Studies have revealed that an individual’s IQ is not the most important component for success.
3. Listen Actively. Actively learn to pay attention and demonstrate to others that you truly value their opinions and what they have to say.
4. Make fear your friend. To eliminate fear, you have to first be exposed to fear allow yourself to feel afraid and expose yourself to it.
5. Improve your body language. Your body language is nothing but non-verbal communication which includes the gestures and movements you project. Research has proved that the correct body language can help you connect effectively with others and convey your message across more efficiently.
6. Get along with others. You must always look for means to create rapport with others. However, you need to be honest and your primary objective should not be to manipulate others, rather your should learn the ways through which you can relate and get along well with others.
7. Get along with yourself. Getting along with yourself is a precursor to getting along with others. You must learn to appreciate and accept your skills, experience, philosophies, aspirations, and limitations. This healthy focus and more grounded you, is inspirational and charismatic.
8. Stop procrastinating. You need to understand that procrastination is not a character trait, but rather a habit. Since it is a habit, it is 100% possible for you to unlearn it just as you have learnt the habit. Strive to utilize time is the most effective manner and avoid procrastination by all means.
9. Wake up Early. Develop the habit to get up early. The age old proverb which says: “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise!” has been coined owing to the multiple benefits of an early riser. Studies show that early rises are happier, healthier, and more productive than their late rising counterparts.
10. Become more proactive. Inculcate the habit of proactiveness. Some of the traits of proactive people are :
- They consider themselves to be the creators of their lives.
- They don’t consider themselves to be victims of external conditions.
- They don’t allow other to determine their fate.
- The take ownership of the responsibility for the results the they get.
Self-reflection is taking a deeper look at your life—your strengths, flaws, behaviors, beliefs and things you want to change. It is an intentional attempt to understand how you think, feel and behave. It gives you the opportunity to take an honest look at the areas of your life that need improvement.
Through this process, you get to know who you really are, what your true values are, and where you would like to go in life. Also it helps enhance strengths, improve mental health, and even heal relationships. Some ways of self-improvement include simple tasks such as reading a book, trying something new, mediating, or even waking up early.
There are so many simple, effective ways to start a self-improvement process. Lastly, this is a continuous process that only ends when life ends. To improve your living conditions as well as your mental, physical and social health, you need to continually seek upward progression.
