I pushed through the door again and stepped outside, a gust of wind hitting me right in the face. Squinting, I started walking. Not far along the sidewalk was a group of apartment buildings. They were ordinary, a dull gray color with dark green roofs. Usually, I would have passed them without a second glance, but something - rather, someone - caught my eye.
"Angel!" I called, jogging to catch up to him. He whirled around, surprise on his face. He was wearing a pair of torn jeans and a thin short-sleeved shirt, so his arms were covered in goose bumps. His scars were clearly visible against his pale skin.
"Kyler," he mumbled, staring at the concrete in front of him again as he resumed walking. I took my jacket off and draped it over his shoulders. "Stop giving me your jackets."
"No, you'll freeze," I replied, opening the package of gummy bears. It was then that I noticed the purple lines running around his neck. "Angel, you're more hurt than when you left."
"That isn't really any of your business, is it?" He snapped. I kept my mouth closed, biting my tongue to keep the tightness in my chest at bay. I couldn't help being concerned about him, but he didn't know that. Hell, he barely just met me; there was no way he trusted me yet. "Why are you following me?"
"Do you want me to go?" I asked. He remained quiet.
"No," he finally said, sighing. "But people at school will think you're weird for talking to me."
"Why's that? I see no problem with talking to you," I told him, earning another incredulous stare. I held the bag out to him. "Gummy bear?"
Angel glanced at it, then back at me before reaching in and taking a handful. He bit the head off of one, then stuffed the rest of the body in his mouth. I smiled; he ate them the way children do. He slowed down as we reached a large building, the school, I guessed.
"Well," he muttered. "I have to go."
"Alright. Here," I gave him the bag of gummy bears. He started to shrug my jacket off, but I shook my head. "Keep it."
**ANGEL**
I stared after him as he walked away. No way was I keeping his jacket; at this rate, I'd own all of his jackets in a week. I pulled it off and chased after him, following him right into the forest. He was much faster than me, so I had to run to keep up. And then I dropped the jacket and bag of gummy bears.
Kyler had broken into a full sprint. His body suddenly morphed, and, within half a second, there was a wolf right where he had been. It wasn't just any wolf; it was as tall as I was and had a multi-shade brown coat. I screamed and started running backwards, tripping over a rock and landing on my ass. The wolf spun around at my outburst, and its eyes widened. I pointed a shaking hand at it.
"You-you-you stay away from me," I yelled, trying to scramble back to leave more room between us. My back pressed up against a thick tree; I was stuck. The huge wolf slowly approached me, each step light and cautious. I was right about Kyler: he was going to kill me. I screwed my eyes shut, hiding behind my arms. Something soft came up against my left hand, and I cracked an eye open. The wolf had nudged my palm with its head, and its dark eyes were peering at me. I gulped, trying to keep from screaming again, my pulse pounding in my ears. The wolf sat down, still towering over me.
It turned and snatched the jacket up with its teeth, then draped it over me. I slowly sat up, my eyes scanning its face. It was definitely a wolf, but its eyes were human. It shuffled its front paws nervously, tilting its head to the side. A quiet whine escaped it's throat.
"I'm imagining things," I breathed, and it huffed, giving me a look. Did a wolf just give me sass? It nudged the jacket with its paw, stood, walked in a tight circle, and sat down again. I bit my lip, drawing a drop of blood, and it growled. I released it, and the wolf nodded. I sat further up, onto my knees, and reached out. The wolf lowered its head, letting me place my hand on the top of it, between its ears. "Kyler?"
The wolf yipped and moved forward, knocking me back to the ground, nuzzling its large head into my neck. I winced as it pressed against my bruised, and it quickly pulled back. The wolf - Kyler - squinted at them before licking them. I pulled away, wiping my neck.
"So..you're a wolf," I said quietly, and he gave me a look. Right. Duh. I stood up, tightening his jacket around my shoulders and arms. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Kyler started whining and yipping, realized I didn't understand him, and shook his head. I smiled slightly, giggling, and he stared at me. He took the corner of the jacket in his mouth and started pulling. I let him lead me back to the cabin. When we got to the door, I pushed it open. Before I stepped inside, he nudged me away from the door then closed it with his nose. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest. A few moments later, Kyler opened the door, dressed and back to normal.
"You wanna tell me what the hell just happened?" I demanded. He didn't answer. Instead, he grabbed the jacket, pulled me over to him, and dipped his head.
O.o well that was weird. It didn't turn out the way I had originally planned. But there you go. I am aware that these chapters are short, but I'm doing it on purpose so bear with me c:
