Chapter Five: Jacob

Start from the beginning

Sam shook his large, wolf head and stepped closer.

Its happened before.
He stated.

My frantic pacing stopped abruptly, as I jerked my head in his direction.

What?!

It was a long, long time ago. Before the Cullen's ever arrived. Before the treaty. When shifting and imprinting alike were still a little new to us. The Cold Ones hadn't fully been discovered for what they truly were just yet. The fourth known shifter of our original tribe imprinted on what he thought was a pale face woman. He was wrong. She was, in fact, a vampire. Unfortunately, once the rest of the tribe, including the three other shifters discovered what she really was, they hunted her down and killed her. Needless to say, the shifter's fate was not much better. Although the tribe did him no harm, he basically mourned himself to death.

Suddenly, I lost the ability to stay up right, so I just let my legs give out, and my heavy body drop to the forest floor, letting out a long, low whine.

Sam crouched down in front of me.

So... What's going to happen now? Are you and the rest of the pack going to kill him?
I thought.

Sam's wolf form snorted, almost like he was laughing, causing me to raise my head and stare at him.

Don't be silly, Jake. We are a hell of a lot more civilized and compassionate than our ancestors were. We might not care for the Cullen's too much, but even I can recognize that they are good. We wouldn't touch him even if we wanted to. Couldn't really. Treaty.

This eased my mind greatly. At least I knew I hadn't caused a freaking war.

What do I do now, Sam?
I thought, cocking my head slightly to the side.

Sam stood from his crouched position before answering,
You need to talk to him. As soon as you think you can handle it. Explain to him what's happened, because the imprint causes mutual emotions on both sides. He's feeling everything you are right now. As calm and controlled as Edward usually seems, he's probably pretty rattled at the moment.

This caused me to jump to my feet. I didn't fully understand the concern I felt for him, and a new thought had my mind racing even more.

Bella. Sam, what about Bella? This will destroy her!

Sam's entire form tensed, but it wasn't his voice that answered me.

She will recover. It won't be easy, and its gonna hurt like hell. But, once she understands the situation, she will be able to cope with it.

Leah stepped out from the darkness to stand next to Sam.

I know first hand what something like that feels like, but I also no that it doesn't mean the end of the world. She will get through it, Jacob.

Sam turned his large head away from her, and all I could do was stare at the two wolves in front of me. Leah's speach didn't really help as much as I'm sure she hoped it would. We all saw the hell she went through, and was still going through, when Sam imprinted on Emily. Now, I was going to launch Bella into that same hell.

After a few seconds of silence, Sam turned his attention back to me.

Look, this is a lot to handle all at once, so go home. Get some rest then, talk to him in the morning. I'm sure he will survive till then. Leah and I will meet up with the others to finish our patrol. Go home, Jacob.

Without any further hesitation, I started running straight for home. As I bolted through the woods, imaged of Edward and I flashed through my mind. I shook my head with a snarl, and kept going. I didn't stop until I phased back to my human form right outside my open bedroom window.

As carefully, and quietly as I could manage, I climbed through the window, and made my way to my bed. I pulled the covers back and quickly climbed in. I shut my eyes tight, praying for sleep that I figured probably wasn't coming.
