Walking into the school grounds felt like I was under inspection. All eyes were turned in my direction as I made my way to the front office. Finding it easily, I pushed the old, squeaky door inwards as I stepped into the warm room. A middle aged woman sat at the desk, tapping away quietly on her computer. As I neared, she raised her head, talking in who I was before shuffling around some papers, obviously realizing how I was. It was already half way through the first term of school and there wouldn’t be any other students staring this late.

“Harper Smith?” The lady questioned, raising her eyebrows slightly.

“Um, yes, that’s me.” Seeming to have to think about the answer.

“Here are your personal information forms, if you could just fill them out we can get you sorted into the appropriate classes” she handed the forms over to me with a pen.

I took a seat in one of the nearby reception chairs and began to fill out the forms.

There were the common questions; name, date of birth, parents, contact information as well as the questions that were needed specifically for class assignment; race, level of power/size of mark.

Hoping to pass under the raider as this school I answered as boringly as possibly; Trai race, low levels/two cm diameter mark, the smaller the mark, the less power. The average persons mark was around five cm in diameter and it remains that size throughout ones lifetime with everyone’s mark being unique.

Filling out the rest of the required information I handed back the form to the receptionist who then spent a few minutes assigning me to my classes.

Schedule in hand, I headed out of the office and off to find my first class, although I had already missed half of it.

Room 3B, my first class. Looking at my schedule I read that it was history with Mr. Rushwell. History was not my best subject.

Pushing open the door I entered the room that grew silent at my arrival. The teacher paused halfway through what they were writing on the board and quickly made their way over to me.

“Harper Smith?” He questioned

Not being able to find my voice I simply replied with a small nod of my head.

The teacher sighed and rubbed his slightly balding head, the dark bags under his eyes showing the true nature of his exhaustion.

“Please take a seat,” he gestured towards the other seated students where there was only one desk spare.

Making my way down the aisle, I took my seat and retrieved a small notebook that I would be using until I purchased the correct books I needed for my subjects.

“Ok class, we have a new student, Harper Smith. Harper we are currently working on a group assignment, you will have to be paired up with Daniel as he is the only one left without a partner” the teacher addresses the class.

I looked up and the boy sitting next to me gave a small nod of his head in acknowledgement, his crooked smirk telling me that this was Daniel.

Daniel was well built from what I could tell. His dark brown hair was cropped short with the front left a bit longer, allowing him to style it into a messy ‘just got out of bed’ look.

I looked back down at my notebook and started to takes notes on what the teacher was saying. The rest of the class continued like this until the bell rang. Daniel gave me one final nod before leaving the classroom. Weren’t we supposed to organize our group assignment? I packed up my books, pulled out my schedule and made my way to my next class.
