"Is that right? And what do I get in return?"
"Literally anything Rex. I'm dying out there. I haven't spoken this much in like five years." He laughs again as I dramatically slam my head down onto the bar. He motions for me to lift my head up and I do. He cleans the bar and then I place my head back down.
"Why do you think I'm behind the bar?"
"I thought you just liked making drinks."
"That too." His grin widens and then he turns to serve someone else but upon closer inspection there is no-one else around who wants a drink. I am just about to question him when I feel an arm loop through mine. Trilla is back from the bathroom and Rex has just left me to deal with her alone. The traitor.
Trilla grabs her drink and drags me further into the crowd of people. "You need to help me (y/n). A senator of all people just asked me out to dinner."
"Why did you invite a senator to my party?"
"I don't know." She leans her head against my shoulder, her eyes drifting closed for a second. "He looked really cute when I met him earlier."
"Then why didn't you accept the date?"
"Because he's a senator and I don't have the time. Haven't you heard my best friend just became the grand inquisitor and she'll need someone to watch her back on missions."
"You are impossible."
"They scare me with all their talk of politics." I laugh but avoid telling her that I love politics. Well I used to anyway, before the Empire took over and replaced our democracy with a dictatorship. Most of the senators now are just the Empire's loyal servants.
I feel a pang of guilt, thinking about all of the things I am keeping from her, not just my opinions of politics but the fact that I am planning on destroying the entire Empire, something that she has dedicated her life to.
I want to tell her but I know that I can't, that I can only rely on myself to execute this plan. It's a lonely life I am leading.
I down my drink in one shot.
《✧》
The next few hours pass quickly as I knock back drink after drink. The small buzz from before turned to dizziness as the world around me slowed down, which was quite unfortunate for them because, with the amount of alcohol blowing through my bloodstream, I could have been telling them anything. At least if I happened to say anything too embarrassing I won't remember it tomorrow.
I am standing at the edge of the room, politely nodding to whatever the inquisitor, who I don't know the name of nor do I want to find out is talking about. I'm not actively trying to be rude but I just think it's funny how quickly the tides change. Yesterday, this person would never have even thought of coming up to me, but now they suddenly have so much to tell me.
My attention falls on Trilla who looks to be wrestling chairs into a circle. I apologise to the inquisitor in front of me before making my exit from the conversation. "Trilla? What are you doing?"
"I'm setting up the seats for a game of never have I ever." I groan audibly and she grins at my complete hatred for party games. "And before you try and get out of it, you can't."
"And why is that?"
"Because I say so. I threw you this amazing party and you are not going to ruin it by being in a bad mood."
"Fine. Aren't we all too drunk for this though?" She stares at me like I'm stupid.
"You have to be drunk to play this game. It's a legal requirement." She says in a tone that says duh.
