In the mid-16th century, two young men met on a starry night. Both had sneaked out of their homes simply to watch the stars in the clear sky.
Their furtive departure wasn't uncommon, they had been meeting in secret almost every night since they found themselves in love with each other.
During those little moments, nothing in the world mattered to the two young men, no one could judge them for what they were. It was just them, sharing their deep, forbidden love.
And that brings them to the present moment, where one of the boys, who was called Peter, sat on a bench with sad tears streaming down his cheeks.
"Now, tell me, why are you crying?" Alec, the other young man, asked holding his hands. Peter remained silent for a while, unable to contain the tears.
"I cry because I can't be with you. My parents arranged me a marry with a duchess." Not looking him in the eye, Peter didn't notice the surprised look on his lover's face.
Alec's mind didn't leave that thought. Here was the boy he loved, telling him he was betrothed to someone, and that someone wasn't him.
It hurts.
"And did you accept this absurdity?" The question was rhetorical, but an answer was still expected. Alec knew this would happen someday, they could never be happy.
It wasn't allowed.
"Either I get married, or I can never see you again!" Peter replied feeling guilty, now with his eyes fixed on the other's gray orbs.
"Then we'll run away, somewhere they won't be able to find us." He spoke determined, even if it was impossible. There would be no place for them, persecution would never cease, and peace would not be attainable.
"And where would we go? Look at us, we were born in the 16th century, two men. What would the church say about this? We would be killed just for loving each other!" He said exasperated.
Alec thought about it, of course. He didn't care about the risks of getting killed, but he couldn't bear the thought of Peter dying for him.
"Marry then. Marry this duchess." He replied abruptly, earning a puzzled look from Peter. "I love you, I love you enough to not let you die for me." With his own watery eyes, he continued. "Promise me you'll be happy. Promise me so I can let you go." He pleaded.
Peter couldn't be happy, not without him.
"I can't promise something I won't keep. I could only be happy with your hugs, with your kisses. I couldn't be happy without you by my side."
Alec released the grip on his hands, bringing them to Peter's face. Bringing him closer to him, he placed a goodbye kiss on his lips and pressed both foreheads together, enjoying that last moment.
"I will love you forever, Alec." Peter whispered kissing him once more, caressing his cheek lightly before leaving. He didn't look back, Alec was grateful for that.
A single tear dripped onto the wooden bench as he watched the boy walk away. He knew that nothing from the past would ever happen again, every kiss, hug, laugh... every moment...
Everything was in the past now.
"I will love you forever, Peter."
