DISCLAIMER:
First of all, this is HEAVILY inspired by @paulruddfanclub 's video on tiktok so shoutout to them.
ALSO this will follow the cannon stablished by Season 4 but at the same time it won't. Eddie's death in the Upside Down still happened but other things like Jason's death and the very last scene of the last episode won't be cannon in this fanfic. I might change or add more things in the future.

Also some trigger warnings for: angst, ptsd, blood, gore, suicidal thoughts/suicide attempt, homophobia, depression and anxiety. These are for the whole fanfic in general but I might add some more later, and please comment if you think I should add any other warnings.

Anyways I hope you enjoy this!

Steve Harrington exhaled as he let out the smoke from his mouth. He was laying on top of a large lounge float, a cigarette in his hand and his eyes in the starless sky as the float moved around his pool.

It was a quiet night, which, in Hawkins, could mean anything. It could mean that something was about to happen, a monster would come out of the shadows before you knew it and attack you, but it could also mean that the evil and terrors that surrounded the town decided to take a break for once, and let the townspeople rest and be in peace for a little while.

But peace never lasted long. Not in Hawkins. He knew that, and so did his friends, specially the ones that were still alive. All of them were waiting for the next storm, preparing for whatever was coming next after the events from two months ago.

Two months since everything had went to shit. Since the whole town (the whole world) almost got destroyed by Vecna. Two months since Max had ended up in the hospital, no one knowing if she'd ever wake up again.

Two months since Eddie had died.

Steve took a breath as his eyes filled with tears.

It still hurt. It hurt so much. When he saw Dustin after everything was over and saw the boy's face wet with tears and his eyes empty where a light used to be, he just knew that Eddie hadn't made it.

It was so painful and frustrating and unfair. He had been so young, his death so brutal, he had died with a ruined reputation, and he and Steve had just dated for a few months before Eddie died, every single of their plans and hopes just gone like that. Gone with him.

One of the things that hurt the most about Eddie's death was that Steve was never (and would never be) able to say those third words that would've changed things between the two of them.

"I love you." He whispered, for a second imagining that he and Eddie where laying next to each other on Munson's bed. "I love you, Eddie Munson."

He wondered, if he had said those words to Eddie the last time they saw each other, would Eddie have made a different decision instead of sacrificing himself? Would he have chosen to not take the risk and go back to Steve?

There was no way of knowing now.

Steve let go of his cigarette, which fell on the water. He sobbed, feeling pathetic and hurt and alone. So alone in that big house with no one else but him there. So alone without Eddie. He knew he wasn't completely alone, he still had Robin, Nancy and the kids, but still: his boyfriends absence hurt so much. Too much. He wondered if someday he would be able to carry on, stop with the grieving and tears and maybe even start dating somebody else. But even though he and Eddie hadn't dated for that long and he wasn't 100% sure if Munson had taken their relationship as serious as he had, the idea of dating someone new after Eddie felt like the biggest form of betrayal and disrespect to his memory.
