Caleb was just a regular rhino. He had one long, shiny horn, so majestic, it made all the other guys jealous. His days were spend lounging around in his Ford Focus, driving and roaming the countryside with his gang. For now.
Summer was here of course! For three weeks now, Caleb and his clique would take out the car and drive around , often to the seaside. The smell of the ocean, the salty wind rustled his locks ,while he would go skinny dipping with his friends. Today, he was doing his usual thing. Gazing at the star lit sky at the beach , he mind raced. His Ford stood the edge of 4th Street Highway and his friends prepared to start a good fire.
"Hey Big Boy! What's over there? Come over here , ya big goof"
Landy guffawed.
Landy, Caleb's friend and favourite giraffe, was also the school's quarterback. He stood at a mighty 18'3 feet.
Caleb sighed and trekked back to his friends at the beach , sitting around a cozy fire, roasting marshmallows.
Although he was the everjoyous rhino, today was different. His girlfriend, Pamela Seal, the most beautiful seal in the ENTIRETY of Northwest High, had DUMPED him. He heart grew heavier and he slumped down to Michelle. Her s'more was adequate at best.
"Amazing s'more there, mic" Caleb grinned
"Shut up Cab" she rolled her eyes.
"He's just playing around Michelle" Landy said while heating his
s'more to perfection.
Michelle glared at his s'more. "Hmph" Michelle was a zebra and one of Caleb's childhood friends.
"Anyways , as we were talking , about that party tomorrow at Caleb's house...." Began Landy
"Sorry...it's off" Caleb hung his head low
A flurry of disconcerted exclamations rose around the rustling fire. Caleb focused his attention on heating the marshmallows.
Landy , who had been eating a particularly large s'more, began choking.
Jayden, sitting next to him,thumped him on the back with his trunk while he sputtered. "Why the hell not ?" Jayden asked in his deep voice.
"Yeah why not , cab?"
"Yeah dude, that's a bummer"
"Calebbb... Don't be a total bummer. Tomorrow's the last day of the summer holidays" Landy stared into Caleb's soul after he was done choking.
Caleb sighed. He had no other option. " We broke up" He finally said.
Landy began choking again. Michelle gasped and clapped her hand to the mouth. Jayden stared at Caleb and he handed Landy some water. Julie jerked awake.
"Omg Caleb it's going to be alright, Pamela was a bitch-" Began Julie who, until now , had been dozing off
" Not now, Jules " Jayden murmered.
"No, it's okay Big J. Now that we're finally broken up, you guys can all talk shit about her. So will I" Caleb said in a desperate attempt to cheer himself up
" We're here for you, all the way Cab" Michelle patted him on the shoulder.
"Yeah bro, we love you" Caleb was engulfed in a crushing group hug
Julie, who had just now, started on her s'mores said " Well, isn't it all the more reason to have a party?"
The others stared at her.
"What do you mean? You hate parties"Landy blurted.
" Yeah....but I hated Pamela more. Now that Caleb's finally free of her, we should have a celebration" Julie said simply.
" Huh , Caleb how about it?" Landy turned his long necks towards the rhino.
Caleb sighed "Fine"
He was once again crushed in the group hug.
"I ..... can't... breathe" He gasped.
"Sorry, Cab" Michelle grinned.
"You're the best guy an elephant could ask for" Jayden grumbled.
"Jay, don't be mopey" Julie said
"It's the truth" Landy loomed.
Caleb, although still feeling pretty down, chuckled and gazed at the shining moon.
A couple of s'mores later, the group of friends stripped off their clothes and began to head into the waves of the night ocean.
"Last one to the water has to buy us pizza at Elfanzo's" Julie shouted while running.
"Well, it sure as hell ain't gonna be me!" Michelle declared while speeding up
And so the fun continued into the night.
Later, after putting on fresh dry clothes and dropping off his friends at their homes ( Jayden and Michelle) and Arcade ( Julie and Landy) Caleb drove his Ford in the streets of small town Meslla. He'd always liked summer better than any other season. Mostly because he could go swimming.
As he drove through the empty streets, his mind wandered back towards Pam. They'd been together 2 years and he was deeply in love with her. And today, all of that , all their petty fights and make-ups, was over.
Overcome with frustration he sped up past the speed limit. She'd called him last night, and dumped him. His heart ached and his vision slurred. He sped up more and-
He couldn't have seen the tree he crashed into.
Coughing, his head hurting bad, Caleb forced his eyes open.Spilt wood and glass shards peirced his skin.
He could taste metallic scent of blood. His beloved Ford was ruined. He reached for his phone, but before he could call 911, he fell into unconsciousness. The world before him blurred and he passed out.
