Jsyk this is so cringe and Bad
[Y/N] gazed out the window, watching for the "Welcome to Oklahoma" sign she knew was coming up soon. It had only been a few hours in the car so far, but she was already anxious to get out of the car, even if she wasn't particularly excited for the destination.
Her parents were talking quietly up front; [Y/N]'d taken the backseat, the few things she'd brought along spread on the seats. Her focus was on the rapidly passing scenery, though, waiting to enter Oklahoma with a vague, detached interest. She'd lived in Oklahoma her whole life before her dad had got a job offer in Kentucky four years ago, but she'd never been the type to get emotionally attached to a house or a neighborhood or a state. And she hadn't left behind too many close friends or relatives.
Finally, [Y/N] sighed and tore her gaze from the window, getting more impatient by the minute for the car ride to be over with. They'd be staying with her aunt, who they hadn't seen for a few years, which would be nice. [Y/N] had also left behind some school friends, but no one she cared to get back in touch with. The truth was, she hadn't had many close friends before she moved to Kentucky. She'd been pretty shy when she was younger, but had come out of her shell quite a bit after moving to Kentucky and starting high school. She wasn't a greaser, but she'd grown up in that part of town- her family was comfortably middle class, not poor but not Soc-y rich either. They'd lived a block or so from Mom's best friend, Mrs. Mathews, and would be visiting her on the trip. Mom had met her in high school, but they'd gone their separate ways when Mom went to college, finally catching up and reconnecting when [Y/N] was around eleven. She was seventeen now.
Mrs. Mathews had a son around [Y/N]'s age, but she and Keith has never been real close friends. He'd been twelve when she'd first met him , and he'd already had a gang of close friends that she'd never really be a part of. It didn't bother her, though. She liked him alright, but he was one of those cousin types she hung out with because it was more fun than staying and listening to Mom and Mrs. Mathews chat. He was nice enough, but she knew it would be awkward to see him now, four years later. What would she do on the visit? She was older now. Maybe she could stick with Mom. Or just go with Keith like usual. Except he was four years older and probably would feel just as awkward as she would if she tagged along.
[Y/N] was mulling all this over for the umpteenth time when that deep blue welcome sign caught her eye, and a wave of emotion swept over her. The car ride was almost over, so... relief, but anxiety too, and maybe, just possibly, nostalgia. Maybe she'd misjudged her own emotions, because she started remembering her childhood in Tulsa and suddenly felt excited to be back in the old neighborhood, see how it had changed... Changed. Maybe she'd be disappointed after all. So she tried not to have any expectations. Not to feel much at all.
When they finally entered Tulsa and pulled into the Mathews' driveway- [Y/N] wished they could go to her aunt's first and put away her stuff, but Mom was apparently dying to see her friend, and the Mathews' house was on the way- [Y/N] nearly fell out of the car. The cramped drive from Missouri had left her forgetting how it felt to walk. She walked around to the other side of the car because it gave her a chance to stretch her legs; by the time Mom and Dad got out, she was feeling better. Mom led the way to the Mathews' front door and knocked. [Y/N] hung back a bit, mostly anxious to get the initial "hellos" out of the way. Her dad caught her eye and smiled at her. Both he and [Y/N] had always felt out of place when Mom and Mrs. Mathews gabbed. She smiled back, knowing she at least had the option to stay with Dad during the visit.
A young girl, around twelve or thirteen, opened the door. [Y/N] recognized her as Mrs. Mathews' daughter, who'd been around eight the last time she'd seen her; therefore, she'd never really paid her much attention. She smiled at them, and [Y/N] heard Mrs. Mathews call from the other room: "Who is it, honey?"
"The [L/N]s," the girl called back. Mrs. Mathews appeared at the doorway a few moments later, and lots of squealing and giggling ensued. [Y/N] thought it was weird that two grown, middle-aged women would still behave like such giddy teenagers. They must've been real excited to see each other.
[Y/N] looked at Mrs. Mathews as she greeted her and Dad- she looked older, and tired, but with the same kind eyes and smile. [Y/N] grinned at her. She really did like Mrs. Mathews- she was a sweet lady- she only got bored of listening to her and Mom go on chatting. Or she used to when she was eleven, she realized. Maybe it would be different now. She'd been figuring the visit would be boring, but of course actually getting there and greeting the old family friend put her in better spirits. Plus, she'd changed a lot since then- she was way more outgoing and would probably enjoy catching up with everyone.
They stepped inside, and [Y/N] followed everyone into the kitchen. Mrs. Mathews offered everyone something to drink; Mom got a glass of iced tea while [Y/N] and Dad passed on the offer. "There should be cookies on the table, I think," Mrs. Mathews said, so [Y/N] sat at the kitchen table and took one. Mom and Mrs. Mathews were already starting to catch up, which meant they'd discuss every event that had happened to them in the last four years, which would take as long as it sounded. Dad gave her an apologetic smile, then Mom asked him a question and [Y/N] knew he'd be sucked into the conversation for a while too. She took a bite of the peanut butter cookie.
Mrs. Mathews' little daughter had said hi, but she had already gone back to her room. There was also no sign of Keith. Which may be for the better, [Y/N] thought, right before the front door slammed open and a guy's voice started off yelling. Never mind.
Keith raced by behind her, running into the kitchen, asking where the milk was, opening the fridge, slamming it shut, and hastily greeting everyone, before plopping down across from her, the carton of milk in hand, and taking a cookie. The whole display took no longer than five seconds. [Y/N] was starting to remember why she hadn't used to enjoy hanging out with Keith more often.
"Hi," he said cheerfully, and she intended to glare at him before she saw him and her breath literally caught in her throat. This was unfortunate, because she was trying to eat, and she immediately started coughing, what with the cookie stuck in her throat. She was able to stop choking, and quickly regained her composure. He'd sure changed in four years. He'd been a fourteen-year-old kid last time she'd seen him, and now he was... Well. He was a lot more attractive, to say the least. [Y/N] just swallowed and said, "Hi, Keith."
