On this beautiful, really hot morning I was getting ready to tend to my garden when I noticed my hydrangeas looking burned and wilted. I wasn't sure why. Upon further research I have learned hydrangeas are sensitive as fuck and here is why:
1. Too Much Fertilizer
Too much fertilizer will lead to sodium/nitrogen build up which will chemically burn the hydrangeas' roots. This will cause them to turn brown, droop and die. You should really only fertilize them once in March, May and July with fast releasing fertilizer underneath the branches (not directly at base) as hydrangeas are not heavy feeders. You may also use slow release fertilizer in which you cover the fertilizer with soil in order to activate it.
3. Too Much Sun
Hydrangeas require partial shade (2 hours of direct sunlight a day) and if they are in the sun too much they end up burning.
4. Too Big of flowers
If the stems are still weak and the blooms are too big, the stems will eventually droop leaving the plant more susceptible to death.
5. Not Enough Water
Hydrangeas require MOIST soil and should be deeply watered 3 times a week for strong root growth.
Tip: Make sure to prune the hydrangea if there are wilted leaves, leaving more room for healthy growth to form.
