Backstory: James Byers is Joyce Byers younger brother and uncle to will and Jonathan.
He had been helping out with the upside down since the start and knew some secrets about Hawkins lab.
In season 3, he goes on a mission into the Russian base underneath starcourt mall and ends up being captured by the Russians.
The secrets he knew about the lab made him a huge target and so he was sent to the Russian max security prison to await his punishment.
