Now, I know what you must be thinking by the title of the chapter, but, if we're being honest, with what I have learned, I think we can all agree that Disney intentionally sabotaged Treasure Planet. Why? Well, from what I understand I believe they had a couple of reasons. I believe the biggest one is if it doesn't do well enough for Disney in theatres/at the box office (which it did :( ), then they'd have an excuse to stop making 2D animated films, since it was sadly reaching it's end because of 3D animated films coming into the scene at Disney. But theres more to the story then that.

I think one of the biggest ways they fought to sabotaged the film is through its marketing and promotion. The way they mostly advertised the film was abysmal. Trailers revealing way too much of the film, them just not conveying what the film is really about, or it's charm or personality and uniqueness in the right way, making it look uninteresting or clichéd. Like how the heck did you manage to do that?! Yeesh.

Another thing that worked against the film was when it was released in theaters. It was released on November 27th, 2002. That may seem normal, until you look at what other films came out that same month. Wanna guess? Well, guess what? The films that came out at the same time as Treasure Planet were flipping HARRY POTTER and The Chamber of Secrets, AND Die Another Day!!! (aka a 007 film) like, what the heck?! Just how?! Why?! In what universe is that fair?! How was the film suppose to compete with one of the most popular franchises of all time?! That really sucked :(

I WISH I could have seen Treasure Planet in theaters when if first came out, but I just turned 3 years old when it was released :(

So anyway, another way was also through it's merchandise. There was a very minimal amount of merchandise made for the film. They had McDonalds toys, figures, videogames, plushies, pins, keychains. Heck, they even made a board game! (That I got it for Christmas last year :D) And what I thought was the coolest thing was they had made wooden sculptures of the characters at DisneyLand! And there were even rumors there was gonna be a DisneyLand ride for Treasure Planet! But I guess it wasn't enough to save the film from its fate. :(

Recent Update as of Late October to early November 2022: I WILL give Disney this though. For the films 20th Anniversary this year, of 2022, they did make 2 pieces of official merchandise to celebrate, even though that's not much. But hey, I'll take it! It's the first time Disney has acknowledged the film since it's release in 2002!

They released 2 items onto their ShopDisney online store. An Anniversary ornament and cloisonné pin. Which I got both of them! I couldn't help it I love this film so much and they're actually really cool and pretty good quality not gonna lie <3 😭
