Toeing the Line

"So are we teeing off?" I sip my drink and look around at the crowd, "It seems a little too crowded for my taste." 

"Yea Rafe I agree with you." Kelsie says as he lifts his drink. "We could just enjoy some pre-Midsummers drinks." He takes a sip of his drink and smiles. 

Y/N POV

The beach is quiet, which is odd because the waves are almost perfect, too perfect to not be ridden. The sun is shining and the gulls are adding perfect ambiance to read my book. I set down my bag and roll out my towel. "Hey Y/N wanna get in the water with me?" Wheezy smiles asking the question.

"Awe wheeze, I'm sorry, not yet." I give an apologetic smile.

"Its no big deal," she reassuring me. She turns around and makes her way to the water.

I turn and sit on my towel and take in the salty air. I shut my eyes and smile.

"What are you smiling about?" Kiera asks. Her hair is tied up with a few curls escaping from her headband. I always liked it when she didn't try. Her parents made it so hard for her to be happy, but at least when she was with us she could escape all of that. I remember when we first met, she was crying in the bathroom at school because she didn't want to go home, and when I asked her to explain, she just said "I live in a family where your last name matters". From the start her parents hated her for being friends with Pogues.

"The Sun" I open my eyes, "It makes me feel warm inside."

"Well its the sun, that's what it does" she says as she sits next to me. a moment of silence passes and Sarah joins us after she feels the water.

"Its cold, I'm not sure how she is swimming in it." she lets out a laugh.

"Can I talk to you about something, Sarah?" I finally ask. I can see the concern rise in both of their faces.

"Sure, what's up?" she says.

"Well, Topper asked me to Midsummers and I know that you used to date him Sarah so I just want to know if I should go, I mean I don't want to upset you, but I said yes to him because he seemed to excited. I can call him and tell him n-"

"Girl!" Sarah interjects, " I am not upset you don't need to worry, ha, in fact I think that it would be awesome, we could get ready together since Kei refuses to go this year, I wont be miserable and alone." She smiles and turns to Kie.

"You should totally go," Kie adds, "plus you always work and JJ and Pope always slack off, they can do the work this time. Don't worry." I lean my head on her shoulder and we all watch Wheezy jump the waves.

Sarah laughs at herself and we both look her way, "What?" Kiera says giggling.

"I was just thinking about how Rafe has never taken you to midsummers and then complains the whole time." She looks at me with a furrowed brow, "Has he asked you?"

"We have talked about it last year but he told me that Ward didn't like the idea." I reply. That's the truth. He asked me last year, and I was really excited, but that same night, he told me no and that he was going to take another girl instead. It hurt. Not because I liked him or anything but he was my best friend and he ditched me. The night of Midsummers while I was working, he pulled me to the side and told me that he wanted to take me, but Ward said no. I never really understood why, because I always thought that he liked me but that night I found out that was not true.

"Well Fuck what Ward says! You are going this time" Kie says.

"You can get ready with me, and they can come get us from the house" Sarah adds in.

"Well I think that should work. Do you think Topper and John B will get along?" I ask because I feel like Topper still hates John B, but then again, maybe not, Its been 2 years since they broke up.

"If he has a problem then that's on him, Like that was so long ago." Kie says. I always like how blunt she was.

Wheezy makes her way back to us and plops down in the sand. "Are you guys talking about Rafe?"

"Actually Topper" I grab the extra towel in my bag and hand it to her. She stands and begins to wipe the sand from her legs. 

"So why is he the topic of conversation?" She asks.

"He is taking Y/N to Midsummers." They say in unison.

"Oh!" She smiles, and then frowns "Does Rafe know?" There is a concerned look on her face.

"Well, Topper asked me this morning, so, no. I am not sure why this would be a big deal to Rafe, plus he is taking Kary from the Country Club."

"Ah, its nothing" She declares.

"Oh shit!, Its 2:30pm," Kie clamors, "I've got to go set up with the boys".

"Oh man, we need to get ready, I need time to look pretty" Wheezy adds. We all giggle as we grab our things and make our way to the Jeep. after a short drive, we drop Kie off at home and make our way to Taneyhill.

"I don't even have anything to wear." I mention to Sarah as we make our way to her room.

"I'm sure we will find something."
