"Would you shut up about your incredibly gay crush on your incredibly gay band," the frat boy teased, distracting himself from the pain of his first tattoo.
They drank beer and bantered about music and tattoos when Kyle noticed a little girl looking at tattoo designs and talking to a couple teenagers about them. He walked up to see what she was drawn to and let his friends talk amongst themselves.
"Aren't those like cult symbols or something," the college student questioned as he watched the teenagers roam around, hearing a chuckle coming from the girl's vicinity.
She explained how there was a meaning behind them all. She spoke of pagans, gypsies and even natural healers. Throughout their conversation the young girl watched her friend pick out a design with a tattoo artist's help.
"Who are you," the fraternity leader finally asked.
The girl turned her head and looked him in the eyes, causing him to notice a special maturity in them.
"Saffron, though most just call me Ronnie," she told him, "I guess it's more modern or something."
He quickly introduced himself as well while the girl left his eyes and roamed around. Kyle innocently watched her, noticing how intrigued she was by the display case under the front counter.
"Hey, Ronnie," Saffron's friend at the counter with her asked, "what flowers are these?"The girl stood up and analyzed the design as the frat boys called over their leader.
She explained that it was a fiery flower that assisted in courage and divine love while still glancing up at Kyle every so often. He was talking about how angry his mom would be if he got a tattoo.
"I'd totally bang her to keep her mind off of it," one reassured the leader, gaining laughs from the entire fraternity except Kyle.
Ronnie saw his happy façade fade for a moment before Kyle quietly laughed along. She noticed the look in his eyes and how perfectly his hair covered the top of them.It worried her, but she also found it cute when he began talking about being something in the future and not having the weight of a random tattoo bringing him down. While listening to his monologue Ronnie felt a more familiar gaze on her, finding the source out of the corner of her eye.
"Stop it, Nan," she quietly scolded, earning a laugh from both of the girls near her.
"You don't have to be a mind-reader to see the way you look at that skinny white boy," the voodoo witch of their coven teased.
Ronnie defended herself by talking about the feeling in her stomach and chest being something different than a crush. The others just harmlessly joked about puppy love, but for some reason it bothered the girl.
"Like there's anything about me even close to puppy-like besides my face, bitch."
They just laughed at her again and began walking past the group of college boys to get their own tattoos. The young girl stayed in place and gave her attention back to the doll she noticed before. She called one of the artists over to take it out of the case, which gained Kyle's focus. The worker placed it on the counter for her and she paused, pushing her hair on top of the flower resting on her ear When she finally held it the overwhelming joy coating her eyes and mind puzzled the men watching. She looked at the price and called out to one of her friends.
"Hey, Queenie, could I have $15? I left my wallet back at the academy."
Apparently both teenagers only brought enough for their tattoos, which disappointed Saffron, "I could buy it for you," Kyle suggested, confusing pretty much everyone in the room.
She asked him why, resisting the urge to step back. He told her he just had extra money in case his frat members didn't have enough. She gave a look of agreement, so he moved to her side of the counter and took out his wallet, setting his beer down.He pulled out a 20 and handed it over, taking the change and putting his wallet away. While his hand was still in his pocket he felt the girl suddenly grab his necklace and inspect it. Kyle watched childlike fear cloud her eyes as she gently blocked her lower body and a tear ran down her cheek.
"Did your mom give you that," she calmly asked, earning a nod.
"My dad gave me this one," she moved her arm and grabbed her own necklace, "it's interesting how parents try to make up for the shit they do with pretty things," she watched him hold back his own tears, "according to him it protects me," Kyle listened closely, "but in my opinion parents just want to announce to the world that they're the only ones who can fuck us over, ya know?"
He nodded and quickly walked to the bathroom in the back. His friends tried to call out to him, but he ignored them. Ronnie followed him, paying no mind to the flower that slipped out of her shoe laces. She went to check on Kyle, but kept herself in front of the door he was behind. She heard him crying and realized it wasn't her place to walk in on him, so she just walked back to the main room and past her own friends.
"I'll meet you back at the academy," she simply stated, grabbing her new doll and leaving before the other girls could stop her. The boys were completely lost, but minded their own business
