The day has finally come, the day I've had marked for months. 13th of May, 1982. I'm almost sure it's a good idea, I have nearly no doubts. It's the first time we're going to go somewhere, all of us, as a family.

Jeremy hasn't called me yet, which is a bit concerning; considering he told me he would update me by 12:00 today. He's not one to make empty promises.

In any case, Clara's rushing me to get ready. Well, not really. I'm already waiting to go, she's just yelling per usual. My father is ready and working, but I only know that because I meant to ask him something.

My plan is that when we all go to the carnival, Elizabeth will ask to go on a children's ride. That way, her and Evan will get seperated from their parents. That's when Jeremy is supposed to come and bring me away from them, so then we can get Elizabeth and Evan far away from here. I'm not sure why Jeremy agreed to do this with me, but it may just be because he's seen how my father and Clara act.

I know my siblings wouldn't want to leave, too scared of complications. They're too young to understand what's wrong in our home. They're too young to be involved with any of this. That's why I hope my mother's family will be rather easy to find, and I really hope they won't send us back.

I stand up slowly and make my way to the kitchen. Elizabeth is waiting there happily, and she waves to me. I hold my hand up for a second in return. She seems really excited to go the carnival, and I, too, if it weren't for my plan. I walked up to our phone and dialed Jeremy's number. Elizabeth recognized the movement from my times of calling him and giggled.

The phone barely had time to ring before he picked up. "Hey! Listen Michael- um, I mean, hello! This is the Fitzgerald household speaking. How may I help you today? Er-"

"Jeremy," I whispered so Lizzy wouldn't hear. "Why haven't you called me yet? Can you not come?"

"Right! Yeah, I'm really sorry. I should've called you but I totally forgot and my dad wanted to talk to me and everything, I'll totally be there."

I sighed in relief. "What time, do you think?"

"Maybe... I don't know, I could probably go now; is your family on their way?"

I cleared my throat and spoke louder so Lizzy wouldn't suspect anything yet. "Oh, um, no. My father, Lizzy, and I are, but I'm not sure about the others. We're still at the house since I called you, yeah?"

"Ah, that makes sense. Well, I could head there now if that's for the best. When would I know to come to you, though? Or where you should be?" He sounded doubtful, "Are you sure about this, Michael?"

I took a deep breath. I wasn't. "No. But I know it's the right thing to do."

There was a long silence on both lines. "You're lucky I trust you, Michael. Have you got change to call me from a pay phone when you get there?"

"Yeah, I've got it. You might want to start going now. And, Jeremy?"

"Yeah?"

"Thank you," I hesitated, but then I noticed Lizzy was looking elsewhere, "You mean a lot to me."

He went silent again. "I'll see you there."

I feel better now that I know Jeremy is coming, but there's still quite the knot in my stomach. I'm fully aware that my father and Clara will be pissed when we leave. It's also fully possible that my father will know where we're going, and find us that way. I definitely don't want that to happen. I'm not sure what Clara will do, especially to my siblings.

Speaking of the devil, she sprints down the hallway in tacky heels. She's wearing a dress and shawl with lots of jewelry; far overdressed for a carnival. My father walks in after her, guiding Evan with one hand.

For some reason, I'm the only one that didn't dress up for this event. I don't recall being told that it was important to look good today, but I was at the very least presentable, since I'd be meeting my mother's family for the first time today. Or, I hope today.

"Come along now," she says, stern. She doesn't hesitate to open the door and walk straight out. I glare for a moment before following behind. Lizzy manages to run through before me, but my father is in no rush.
