Initially, I didn't think an explanation would be necessary, but I'm posting it anyway now because of popular demand.

White is about race-based sexual preferences. Like when someone says things like 'I only date white guys/girls' it sends a detrimental message to someone who isn't in that racial category and that person hence feels like a stranger in their own skin. The general idea or thought is 'I was born the wrong race' and that's what the protagonist in White was going through.

She believed that in order to meet the criteria of her friend's sexual preferences she would have to change her skin colour, only she couldn't. Throughout the story she repeats the words 'I am white' like a mantra as if she's trying to convince herself more than anyone else. She does this because that's what she's told is the desirable skin color. At the end of the story she embraces the idea that she is not white, and the damage to her self esteem and body image is so great, that she equates not being white to not being beautiful.

That's the basic gist of the story. I hope this helped, but if you do have any questions or opinions about the story, feel free to drop a comment below.
