Tony had gotten out of the surgery and was transferred into a room. He was getting better by every passing hour and his condition wasn't critical anymore. You were sitting by his bed and after some time, the sleepless nights caught up to you and you fell asleep. Your hand was placed on the bed and your fingers were lightly touching his.
Tony's eyes fluttered open and he was met with a white, blinding light. He blinked a few times to get used to the light, while his hand found yours on the bed and he gently squeezed it.
You were woken up with that, and you looked down at the bed only to be met with him staring back at you.
"You're awake!" You said and a small smile curved onto his face, before it was replaced by the pained expression. You straightened up and gently pushed him down on the bed when he tried to get up. "Don't move. You just had a surgery."
"When can we go home?" He asked with a groggy voice.
You looked down at him, his hands never leaving yours. You gently squeezed it, moving your thumb over his hand. "You just had a surgery, love. You can't go home yet."
"Damn it." He said, squeezing his eyes shut. "I wanna go back home and forget all of this happened."
"I know. " You said, moving his hair from his face. "Why don't we call a doctor first to check on you?" You asked and he nodded his head. You bent over to place a kiss on his forehead. "I'll be right back."
Almost two full weeks have passed before Tony could finally go back home. You had a medical team on the plane and finally, you were back in New York with Tony, who looked relieved to be back home.
The driver took you back to the facility, and Tony was now restless as you approached it. "Are you okay?"
"What?" He looked up at you. "Yeah, I'm uh... fine." He mumbled out before looking out the window again.
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
The car stopped in front of the facility and you quickly left the car before moving to Tony's side to help him out. He looked at you. "I got it."
You nodded your head, letting him get out by himself. When he got out and was standing in front of the facility, he took your hand in his and intertwined your fingers.
"You ready?" You asked him and he nodded his head. "Let's go then."
As soon as you got inside, Tony's breathing had changed, but he still kept going. You walked towards the living room together, where Vision was waiting for you.
"Welcome back!" He said to you and Tony, who squeezed your hand as his eyes focused on one thing in the living room.
"Tony?" You asked and followed his gaze to Steve's shield that was left by the door. Vision saw it as well and looked at you, not knowing what to do.
Tony's breathing became faster and he was squeezing your hand as he looked at the shield, memories of Steve coming back. His brain focused on one - Steve stabbing the shield through the suit. Sweat formed on his forehead and you saw it.
You gestured at Vision to take it away and he rushed to do so, but Tony's eyes couldn't move off that corner.
"Tony, look at me, please." You pleaded as you put your hands on his face. He did as you asked, but his gaze looked distant. His eyes were wide and he almost couldn't breathe at all.
"I can't breathe." He choked out, his own hands moving towards the collar to untie his shirt.
"Let me. " You said as you loosened his tie and undid the first few buttons, feeling his heart thumping in his chest abnormally fast.
"Can we... uh... can we go to our room?" He asked and you nodded your head, leading him to the elevator.
Only after you were safely closed in your room, Tony could finally breathe.
He sat down on the bed while you took his and your jackets, putting them away. He stared at one spot on the wall and you came to sit next to him.
He put his head on your shoulder and your hand instantly moved to his hair.
"What was that?" He asked.
"I believe you just had an anxiety attack."You said and he moved to look up at you.
"Me?" He asked and you nodded your head.
You sighed and took his hand in yours."Look, Tony, it's normal. If I had known you were going to see that, I'd put it away before you came home. Right now, you need to stop thinking about that and think about your recovery."
"I... " He looked around the room and turned to look back at you. "We can't stay here. Everything reminds me of them... all of them."
You nodded your head. "Where do you want to go?"
"Can we go back to Malibu?" He asked. "We were at peace there and I... well, I liked our life there."
"Of course we can." You said and kissed his cheek.
"How fast can we buy a mansion because I want to go right now?"
And you did come back to Malibu, to your new house. It had significantly helped in Tony's recovery the next few months and he was soon back to his old self. For the first months, he couldn't even look at his suits and you made sure they were back in New York where Tony had no contact with them. You knew it was all because of the nightmares - he dreamt he was back in Siberia, stuck in his suit more than once. That turned into dreaming about the same thing every night.
But, a bit later he wanted them back and they were all stored in the new garage when Tony decided one night that he wanted to try them back on.
You expected another anxiety attack, but he managed to take control of his mind and push aside all the bad memories. The bad dreams slowly began to occur less and less every night.
Tony managed to eventually forgive Steve for what he did, but you couldn't even think about it. You hated that man with everything in you and were hoping you don't see him again.
Still, you were beyond proud of how far he had come and you made sure to let him know and be there for him every step of the way.
