"To meet John, see what I can find out about Freddie"I said picking up my coat.
"Would you and Tommy just let someone else take charge for once"she said fed up.
"Tommys off dealing with the kimber business,which I no longer have a part in so, I might as well make use of my time" I said
"Don't do anything foolish Shirley" she said
"I won't pol" I said leaving the house.
I was coming close to the factory. I had heard talk about a rally and decided to meet John there to take a look. Once I got there people where scattering everywhere and I realised it was over.
"Oi Shirley" I heard John shout
"You heard about the rally at the factory, the police raided them.you think Freddie Thornes back?" He asked
"I know he is and he's with Ada. How hard can it be to find the only girl in Birmingham with four inch heels? She was like my big sister before I met any of you, now I don't even know the first bloody thing about her" I said
"She's with the commies, they have little rat holes all over the city." John said
"I just want to know where she is" I said
John halted and I turned back to him impatiently.
"What?" I asked
"Shirley, you best have a word with Arthur as well. He trusts you the most" he said seriously
"What's wrong with bloody Arthur" I said
"He's got the Flanders blues again" John said
"Where is he then" I asked, annoyed
"At the church"he said
I opened the oak doors to find Arthur sitting with a bottle of whiskey looking Solum.
I walked over and took a seat beside him.
"People keep asking me questions I don't have the answer to. Is it true your Ada got married? I say I don't know. Where's she living now? I say I don't know. Arthur, who killed the paddy from the black swan? I go, what paddy?. They say, is it you peaky blinders, who stole the guns from the BSA?" He finished, then looked at me.
"What guns, Shirley?" He asked
"Arthur after your beating, tommy and i thought you needed a break-" I started
"What bloody guns, Shirley!" He shouted
"Arthur, we where going to tell you." I said putting my hand on his shoulder
"You where going to tell me."he said, unbelieving
"Arthur, listen to me." I said pinning his hands down.
"You've had a hard time these past few years, god knows you have. You deserve some rest. Tommy is dealing with this, we should trust him. All right?" I said firmly, slowly letting go of him. I waited for him to nod then I carried on.
"Come on. Tommy wants us to meet him at the garrison, he has a surprise for you"I said extending my hand for him.
As soon as we got there Tommy met us at the door.
"Shirley, Arthur" he said opened the doors to the garrison
Arthur looked around confused
"A surprise? Where is she" he asked
Me and Tommy snickered
"What is it you've always wanted, Arthur. When we were in France you used to say, when I go back to England, I want to own me own pub. Well... "tommy asked
Me and Tommy grinned at each other
"Now give gone soft. You've gone soft, tommy. How do we know it's for sale?" He realised.
"Anything's for sale to us, Arthur." I said
"We're making a lot of money these days. We need a legitimate business to pass the money from the shop." Tommy said
"I wouldn't know what to do" Arthur said
"You spend two thirds of your life in pubs, just pour it instead of drinking it." I said
"But I can still drink it, right?" He asked
"It's your pub, you do what you want" tommy said
"Ah, sorry gentlemen, didn't see you come in" Harry came out.
My heart broke for him.
"What can I get you?"
