Doubt has a subtle way of lingering like a ghost haunting the very core of one's being.
Watching them, Kyla feels like a stick in a pile of river stones, an introvert frozen in the center of a crowded dance floor-staring at the colorful lights while everyone moves around her in effortless rhythm.
Though only weeks has passed since they met, every glance between them bears the quiet weight of years. They finish each other's thoughts, recall high school memories with a single word, and navigate their shared history with an ease Kyla can only watch from the edges.
Christine notices Kyla's lingering stare first. She reaches across the table, snatching Kyla's half-empty iced coffee cup and sliding a fresh, sealed matcha cup directly into her palm.
"Stop overthinking," Christine says with a playful nudge, popping her straw through her own lid. "You get quiet like that only when you're spiraling. You've been doing it for days."
"I was not," Kyla mutters, though her cheeks flush slightly as her fingers wrap around the cold plastic.
Ashly leans over from her chair, resting her elbow on Kyla's shoulder and turning her into a human armrest. "Good, because you're stuck with us anyway. At least for the next three years or so."
Sheira reaches into her tote bag, pulling out a set of custom engraved resin keychains. She slides one across the table toward Kyla-a delicate green clover charm paired with a tiny wooden tag bearing Kyla's initials.
"I picked them up for our dorm keys," Sheira says softly, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
Zerah bumps her shoulder gently against Kyla's shoulder, sliding a wrapped sandwich onto her notebook. "Eat up. I made extra today, and we have class in twenty minutes."
Kyla looks down at the custom charm resting in her hand, the condensation pooling around the green tea cup in her hands, and the shared meal on the table. The tight knot behind her ribs slowly unspools, replaced by a grounding warmth.
Twenty minutes later, the chatter of the cafeteria dissolves into a low, ambient hum of the main lecture hall. The air inside smells faintly of dry chalk and isopropyl alcohol.
Zerah slides into her usual second row seat, unzipping her pencil case with quiet, deliberate movements. Kyla settles into the desk beside her, opening her notebook just as Crisha steps through the heavy wooden doors.
Crisha carries a neatly organized folder under her arm, her steps barely making a sound on the tiled aisle. As she passes Zerah's row, her gaze meet Zerah's.
Crisha offers a small, knowing smile-a brief, unspoken nod passed between two students who recognized the ink-stained fingers and late hours behind each other's work. Zerah returns the smile, her posture relaxing slightly as Crisha takes a seat one row over and carefully sets out a series of hand-drawn cellular diagrams.
When the professor projected the top quiz scores on the screen, Zerah's and Crisha's names rest side-by-side at the top, separated by three points. Neither girl turns to check who is watching. Zerah simply uncaps her pen, Crisha adjusts the bridge of her glasses, and both pull their notebook closer as the lecture begins.
By late afternoon, the demands of the morning lectures give way to study hours. The third floor of the library is bathed in the golden, light filtering through the high-arched windows.
Zerah sits behind a mountain of Microbiology manuals, her pen moving across index cards as she outlines methods of studying microorganisms. Kyla sits beside her, dragging a blue highlighter across a chapter on metabolic processes, when a dark shadow falls over their table.
Edward, drags out a chair opposite them against floorboards before he sinks into the seat with a single constitutional law textbook under his arm.
"Taking notes on basic cell biology like it is high school all over again, Montañez?" Edward leans back, lacing his fingers behind his head as his lips curve upward. "Some of us are actually reading real legal precedents here."
