Chapter 2
Making Progress... Sort of
Anna was still clinging to me, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not get the little devil off. What is this girl even on? I couldn't use the fire, not only because I love her and would never do that, but because my flame can't harm Blues, the kids with water abilities. Basic, but it gets the point across. There is a downside to this though. If I had to fight one I would have to rely mostly on my combat skills, which I haven't had to do in a while, but we still train every other day.
"Dyyyylan," I drawled out using a sickly sweet voice that made him narrow his eyes. "Could you possibly help me with this little monster? Pleeeease?"
His face goes from confusion to a smug smirk in less than a second. He walked around us, still sprawled out on the floor, to her bed and lay down crossing his legs with his arms resting behind his head.
"I don't know Ev, it seems like she's stuck pretty good. I could try to free you..... but you gotta do something for me, Princess," he still had the smirk and it was driving me crazy but hey, I'll deal.
"What could you possibly want from me, you ape? Last time I checked, little old me wasn't good enough for Dylan to even look at for more than ten seconds. But whatever, do you want tomorrow off training? More cookies?" If you couldn't tell, cookies were kind of a big thing around here. Anna was still clinging to me like wet on water (pun intended) and I don't know why she's still hanging on me.
"Hmmmm, now I have to think about this," He stopped and tapped his chin. I knew he didn't have to think one second about what he wanted. "How about you take me on the next supply run?"
I narrowed my eyes. Why would he want to go on the next run? They aren't that fun or exciting...
"Why?" I said, voicing my thoughts. His eyes flashed with some emotion, but it was gone before I could read it.
"Because I asked, Boofhead," his voice guarded and steelyㄧ as usual.
"Oh, that's a great one Dylan! What's the next name?" Anna laughing her head off still.
"Still working on it," he sneered. "Anna!" He snapped, and she's off! I'm free!
"You didn't have to be a jerk." I snapped at the idiot still on the bed.
Is that all it really took?! I scramble to my feet and head to the door. I see Anna move to her desk, still laughing. Crazy midget..
"Traitor," I mutter walking out. Their laughter reaches my ears all the way to the bottom of the stairs. Stupid children. I wonder why Dylan wanted to go on the next run...
Maybe just to annoy me? I guess we'll have to wait and see. Anyway, I'll have to break the news to Jordan, seeing as he volunteered for the next run. He'll be pretty mad but still, maybe I could convince him to do something else. Something that's productive so he doesn't feel left out. Hmmm...
Walking into the kitchen a wall of scents hit me like a ton of bricks. So many yummy smells attacked my nose and made my mouth start to water.
"Holy mother of cooking! Maddi, why didn't you ever tell me you can cook like a goddess? I mean, I knew you could cook but you've never made anything that smells or looks like this! This smells absolutely heavenly! That's it. You're the new cook. No more trading shifts. Congrats, Maddi, hope you like it!" She started giggling and I couldn't help the grin that spread across my face. "Seriously though, how would you feel about taking over as cook?"
"I'd be honored!" She bows dramatically, "My mom would always make the best lasagna and the whole block would come around just to get some," She got a far away look in her eyes and a stray tear escaped her brown eyes and trailed over her freckled cheeks. She hid behind a curtain of blonde hair, trying not to show her face. I wrapped her in a hug and she hugs me back tightly. "I just don't know how they could kick me out so easily. I was their only child! Do I mean that little?" She's softly crying now and I can't help but feel anger towards her parents.
Who do they think they are? Throwing a child who was barely sixteen out on the streets? How did they think she would make it? It couldn't have been easy hiding her ability for two years. Water is one of the hardest abilities to control. I would be proud! And I was! I hold on to her tighter, trying to find the right words to say.
"Fear makes people do foolish things, Madison. People fear the unknown no matter what and they always will. It's just human nature. I'm not saying what they did was excusable. Far from it, really, but you found us. A family that loves you and cares for you. We will stay by you. You have my word."
I step back and look at her freckled face. It's stained with tears but she had a smile on.
"Thank you," It was barely above a whisper, but I still heard it, "it really means a lot to me, Ev. So I mean it when I say thank you for everything."
I smiled and squeezed her shoulders.
"Do you need any help with finishing up dinner?" I asked trying to be nice.
"No thanks, I've got it from here. I know you need to go fill out your oh-so-ominous journal," she smiled, "oh, but would you please go and get Meghan for me? She's supposed to help set the table."
"Yeah, sure." I leave her to her work and headed down the hall to the right. I stopped at the door just before mine and pounded on the door. I was sure that Meghan had her music blasting through her earbuds.
After not getting an answer, I decided to just walk in and sure enough, there she was, sitting on her bed with the earbuds is and the music blasting. She had a book in her lap and didn't even notice me. I decided to just go over and sit in the bed to see how long it would take for her to notice I was there.
