Present

"You're really good at telling stories."

Josh's voice catches me by surprise and I'm zapped out of my memories. His bright blue eyes are the first thing I notice. They're not as they once were, full of happiness and life. Now they are filled with pain and sadness. His breathing is quick to catch my attention in the sudden silence. It's slow and as if every inhale is a struggle while every exhale is a strangling shudder.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." I say silently.

"No, it's fine. I don't want to miss a single moment with you." His soft voice is too frail for my liking and I am forced to take a nervous glance at the monitor.

He notices this and takes my hand in his, grabbing hold as tightly as his shivering muscles will allow.

"Katie, I'm fine when I'm with you." He urges.

"I know." I reply weakly.

The truth is that was a lie. I know he isn't fine, with or without me. Suddenly I'm afraid to lose him. The love of my life gone forever is a forecast that threatens to breach my shores. I can't stand it any longer and a single tear escapes my eyes.

"Please don't cry." He pleads in a whisper, closing his eyes.

"I'm sorry." I say fighting back the tears.

A lump is forming in my throat, making it hard to speak. It burns slowly away at my strength, making me want to break down right here. But I can't, not in front of Josh.

"Please continue the story." Josh asks weakly, his eyes half open, as if there is not enough will power left in him to open them fully.

"Okay." I say simply, tears still threatening to spill.

"What happens next?"

I smile down at him through the tears, for the first time in what feels like forever, I'm smiling.

"They go through a lot. But eventually, they fall in love."
