And so much more! Okay, I'm done rambling. Onto the story!

Kace had given up struggling against his bonds hours ago. Or was it minutes? He could not tell. His heavy curtains were drawn tight, blocking rays of sunlight, and trapping humidity into the tight space of his room. He could not breathe. He needed to breathe. He needed to stay calm and think straight, but every time his eyes closed, he could only see violent scenes imprinted onto the inside of his eyelids. He could practically feel his hands wrapped around his father's throat, could practically see the light fading from his father's eyes.

He needed to stay calm, despite his rage. He needed to breathe, despite the lack of oxygen. He needed to leave this house, but it was his only home, and he was only fourteen. Fourteen, and desperately alone.

At first, he had been positive his mother would save him. He waited, desperate to hear her light footsteps up the stairs. But they never came. He supposed her fear of her husband outweighed her love for her son. Or perhaps she believed he was a monster, as well. Perhaps he was a monster.

I must be a monster, he thought, and that's when the tears came-pouring from the corner of his eyes, trailing down his delicate face. I am a monster. With the thought, a chill ran through his body, confirming what he already knew. The tears that trailed down his face froze over- crystals on pale skin.

Then he heard the sound he longed to hear- footfalls on wood, nearing his upstairs confinement. The door creaked open, and the foot steps continued in his direction, but he did not avert his gaze from the floor. His shame of his crystallized tears overpowered his curiosity.

"Kaspian?"a quite voice breathed. A young voice.

His eyes darted upwards, meeting the concerned gaze of his seven year old sister, Aurelia- blonde hair fell down to her hips, her blue eyes had little tears pooling in the corners. She had always been so empathetic, possibly the most empathetic person to adorn Kace's existence.

"Don't cry, Kace," she said softly. "Mommy sent me up here to free you."

"Free me? Whatever do you mean?" Kace asked, his voice free of sarcasm. His icy resolve melted when she was around. How could anyone ever be cruel to her?

"I have this," she said, holding up a pair of sharp sewing scissors. "I'm gunna cut you loose. Mommy has a surprise. For you, I mean," Aurelia mumbled seriously, as she began snipping away at the rope on his wrists.

"A surprise?" Kace asked quizically.

"She says you have to leave," Aurelia stated solemnly. She finished freeing his hands, and he carefully took the scissors from her shaking hands, and set to work on the rope around his waist.

"Leave? Where will I go?" Kace asked, desperation coloring his voice.

"I dunno," Aurelia replied. When he looked up, her eyes were full of tears. "But I don't want you to leave me."

Kace snipped away the rest of the rope, and stood. For the first time in his life, he realized he had to be strong. He could not bow to grief, and he could not allow his sister too realize how weak he was.

The boy with ice in his veins allowed the cold to possess him, as he donned his metaphorical mask for the first time, and stood tall.

"Somethings are necessary, Aurelia. Now, let's go see what Mother was talking about," he said, as he pivoted on his heel, and walked out the door.

Aurelia watched in wander as her brother walked away from her, her eyes filling with more tears. She knew he was gone, before he left. She knew, from his blank expression, and the determined set to his jaw.

It would not be the last time she would watch him walk away, his foot steps growing quieter and quiter until they finally faded away entirely.
