I make my way upsteam through the croud of people trying to get out of school for summer break. I have to get to Mr.Thorns class to turn in the last minute assignment he assigned to me. When I finally make it to the room, he is in mid conversation. Not wanting to intrude, I discretely slide behind the door. Automatically, I begin my nasty childhood habit of eavesdropping.
"...yes, but he wants it to be discrete." The voice says. "You HAVE to make it clean. "
"Yes but i-" the other voice is cut off.
"Three days and that's it. You have three days. Then, we come for her. And you. Do you understand?" "Completely"
Odd, Mr.Thorn sounded very grave. A polar opposite of his usual optimistic tone. I slip out from behind the door, careful not to make any noise and quickly scurry down the halls leaving the papers on the teacher inbox.
'Prrup' I jumped, startled by my cats chirp. I was lost in thought. Daydreaming. Ah Summer at last. I sigh, letting the suns rays wrap me in a blanket of heat. I've always loved this feeling. The sun on my face and wind in my hair. My family's ranch is quite large. Over 100 acers of beautiful hills of gold. Most days, I pass the time with my cat, Annie, in the barn. But above all I love to ride Isabelle, my black and white Appaloosa. Today is no different. Scribbling on a piece of paper I turn to Annie, "why can't I just lay here and NOT do homework?" Annie yawns in response. I giggle. Animals always seemed to know what Im saying. At first I found found it a bit unnerving, but now its mostly a relief to know that at least the animals would listen to me.
Suddenly my obnoxious ring tone pulls me from deep thoughts. With a sigh I pick it up.
"Hello?" No answer. "Hellloo?" I try again. This time slightly more agitated. "Leo if that's you I swear I'll kill you!" I wait. A low rumbling arose from the phone. Laughter. Deep, secretive laughter. My blood turns to ice. "Hello?" I squeak. The dial tone was the only answer I got. "Dumbass"
I woke with a start. It has been two days since summer started and my subconscious had decide to kill me with reoccurring nightmares about that suspicious phone call a few days ago. Instead of pondering this odd occurrence, I decide to go ahead and start my day. I roll over to look at my alarm clock and sigh. 5:15 am. the neon pink characters flashed. Ugg. "Oh well" I sigh to myself, and walk to my shower. Letting the warm water caress my skin, I sit down. Humming a tune, I start shaving my legs. My plans for today consist of riding Izzy and going to Leo's farm. No REAL reason to shave. But it makes me feel better.
After my shower I start my chores. I probably should have taken a shower after my chores, but, I mean, no harm done. Right?
Three hours later I am going on a long and much need ride. Isabelle is in a hyper mood which suggests that I might just be brused when I come back.I giggle as the horse gallops and occasionally, but playfully, bucks me off her back as I shout in surprise. The morning sun peaks through the treeline, blinking like a baby waking from a long nap. I smile. The long grass just brushes the bottom of my boots as we ride. I am free. I lean down on Izzy and let her go wherever she decides. It happens so fast. One moment I'm I'm pure bliss. Letting the wind guide us wherever it pleases. The next, I hear Isabelle neigh in protest as I am dragged off of her body. I watch in terror as they inject her side with some liquid. I scream her name and reach for something to hold on to. Something to pull myself from my attackers clutches. I kick and scream. When I turn my head, I see thee men. One dragging me, and two on the lookout. Just as I'm about to plant my free foot into my kidnapers face; someone screams my name. Leo? I turn my head to scream for him, but its not leo. Who?- a rag is stuck in my face. A sickly sweet smell fills my nostrils as my vision starts to blur. I thrash and kick as tears sting my eyes. I wont back down! I tell myself repeatedly. I won't back down!
I won't back-
I wont-
I -
Suddenly I'm terribly tired. Maybe I'll just rest awhile. Ya that sounds nice. "Sleep" a voice murmers in my ear. And that's exactly what I am going to do.
