Prologue

I'm awake. I'm sure of it. There's no way this is a dream; it's too routine. The clock on the wall reads just within the same ten minutes that I always wake up for. I let out a sigh of relief and began to climb down the loft ladder.
Like a cascade of events, my feet hit the ground and I am knocked to the right by a ragged black mass. Before I can realise what's going on, my vision is swallowed by the groaning mouth of some creature stretching its jaw to consume me whole. I'm scrambling across the ground feeling the rough dirt floor on my palms with no clue what I'm heading towards. I can feel its breath on the back of my neck. Hot and damp. I know it's catching up with me but I won't stop moving and won't turn around.
I look up for a split second to see the door of my cabin gaping open right in front of me. What feels like freedom is only 5 feet ahead of me. It's also the only thing illuminated; the rest of the chamber is shadowed completely. All I hear is the creature crashing around the room. It can't see either so I have that advantage.
Flecks of spit hit my bare spine and I dredge up the energy to push forward. Just to the door. The horrorouse animal  must have oriented itself or heard me dragging myself across the floor. Just to the door. I'll be safe once I reach the door, though I don't know why. There's nothing more than a thin cloth separating the two rooms; it would barely distract the beast let alone barackade it in. I am only 3 feet away  when sharp knives are berated into my back, two of them only just missing my spine and dragging down my body with a quick motion. Heat pools at the small of my back and I know I'm bleeding. Two more feet. A screeching sound rises about me and I can't help looking any longer. I turn my head and just before the face of the beast is in view its scream stops and nothing but silence and dark surrounds me. I must be dead.
