"Come out without a fight!" the rebel yelled.

He reeked a foul stench, one that aligned with a lack of soap and water; his breath was no better. With poor hygiene, a few front teeth were missing, but the menacing look in his beady black eyes more than made up for it.

"Unless, or course, you want to give us the girl," He eyed looked me up and down and I shot him a look of disgust.

It wasn't the first time rebels had asked for Kent women as hostages in exchange for public safety. And it wasn't the first time I had been a target. Either way,  I felt Fabian's energy shift as he tensed up beside me.

"NEVER!" he yelled at the Rebel and punched him square in the jaw.

The rebel stumbled back and tripped over his own feet, landing him on the floor. While holding his jaw, and glared deadly at Fabian.

"So be it," The rebel said as he stood up, ready to fight.

As Fabian and the rebel faced each other, I decided I would take out other rebels. From growing up on the farm, and from being around Fabian so much in the recent years, I had become equipped with combat and protecting myself.

Running out of my home, I started to punch every rebel I saw; my fists blending in with their faces and hearing the sickening crack of their nasal bones. This continued as the sun set in the background, its coral and purple colors illuminating the sky. It was almost serene, ironic against the image that rested on the ground below.

My knuckles felt like they were on fire, but I didn't stop until I heard a high-pitched scream. I knew that scream anywhere, as if it were my own. It was Susanna.

I sprinted back to my house, not caring about how filthy I appeared to be, to see Susanna thrown over a tall rebels shoulder. She was knocked out cold, and her chocolate brown hair fell in her face.

"Let her go!" I yelled at the rebel and started to run towards him.

I began smacking his meaty arms, but he just picked me up like I was a rag doll threw me into the corner of my house. My back slammed into the wall and my body slumped to the floor. My head became heavy and I knew I was going to black out any moment, but that did not happen soon enough, because I heard the head rebel speaking to me.

"Until we meet again, my dear," With that, the rebel and his tall friend fled out of our house with Susanna as their captive. And then, the world around me went dark.

I woke up to the sound of yelling throughout my house. Blinking my eyes, I looked around me and tried to remember what had happened. I couldn't, until I heard Mrs. Wolk yelling at Fabian.

"So you just stood there while they took your sister away?"

I slowly walked into the living room where their fight was occurring and cut into the conversation.

"I hate to interrupt," I started slowly, waiting for their eyes to meet mine. "But in actuality Mrs. Wolk, Fabian was trying  hard to get Susanna back. He put up a fight, but the rebel was really big, and there were loads of them. Don't blame him, please."

I tried to smile at the end to try and calm her nerves, but she just shot me a nasty look.

Before she could speak, I felt Fabian's hand wrap around my wrist and I was dragged outside. When he threw my wrist away, I looked up into his eyes and saw that they were no longer the happy, lively eyes I loved. They were cold and filled with anger and hatred.

"Are you okay?" I asked him as I reached my hand up to cup his cheek. When my hand reached his cheek, he slapped it away and avoided looking into my eyes. I've never seen Fabian act this way, and the hurt was enough for tears to well in my eyes. When he finally looked at me, he started to yell.

"Do I look okay to you!" His voice frightened me and I shook. When Fabian saw me jerk, he started to chuckle coldly.

"Oh, so now you're scared of me. Ha, like you should be scared."

My breathing started to quicken and I let out a small whimper. He then started to lean towards me and his voice was filled with hatred.

"You are so so selfish. You have no idea what I am going through right now and you have the audacity to ask if I am alright. Like hell I'm alright; my sister was just kidnapped! And then, to top it off, you're trying to pass this off like it's no big deal, like my own flesh and blood wasn't quite literally stolen out of my own hands! I honestly have no idea why I ever wanted to be in a relationship with you," When his face was a centimeter from my ear he whispered, sending chills through my body.

"You will never be the type of person someone falls in love."

I quickly pulled back and felt the tears I've been trying not to let fall down my face fall. Fabian sounded like he had never even loved me in the first place.

He then turned on his heels and stormed back towards my house.

"Fabian, Wait!" I shouted without meaning too. He turned back around and started yelling at me again.

"You are so ungrateful and I can't stand you right now."

"I'm not being ungrateful," I cried. "I understand what it's like to lose someone to the rebels Fabian, I can--,"

"Stop making this about yourself!" He roared with the fury of a tiger, and my resolve immediately crumbled. "Yeah, I get it, Ben's gone. He's not my younger sister, who wasn't drafted into the army, and who was only taken TODAY."

He shook his head furiously, then laughed.

"I hope you do sign up for that stupid Selection so I never have to see your face again!"

That made me crack, and the tears wouldn't stop flowing down my face. Fabian went back into my house, without a second thought, to retrieve his mother. There was no need to for them to ever come back to my family's home now that we were over.

So I just stood there, heartbroken and crying, as Fabian slammed the back door to my house and left me all alone in the dead silent of the ever-darkening night.
