Trigger warning, this has mentions of suicide. Trigger warning, this talks about depression. Trigger warning, this speaks about abuse. Trigger warning. Trigger warning. Trigger warning.
The phrase 'trigger warning' is such a commonly used phrase, I hear it every day whether it be online, out in public, or at school. Today there are so many things that people are affected by we have to warn them in advance.
Trigger warning: this might make you cry. Trigger warning: don't watch if you can't handle screaming.
We never stop to think why these things may upset, or 'trigger' someone. We use this sentence on the fly without actually questioning 'why?'
Trigger warning: if you are anorexic do NOT watch.Trigger warning: if someone you love has died this will upset you.
So many things happen to people that it becomes the norm. At school I can estimate that I hear the words 'I want to die' or 'I'm going to jump off of the third floor' ten times a day. Everyone is causally suicidal. We all make jokes about such a serious matter. We make jokes so often we can never truly tell when someone is hurting.
We as a society need to stop throwing around words like suicide, depression, rape, abuse, death, as if they mean nothing because they mean SO much to someone else. That girl who became pregnant her sophomore year, who everyone called a slut, was raped by her uncle jimmy. But uncle Jimmy couldn't care less about her safety because she 'got what she deserved.'
Or that guy who is made fun of because sometimes he rushes and his makeup is visible. His makeup he wears to hide the fact that he is beaten and mistreated at home and if he were to show it, he may wind up dead.
We as a society need to become more aware. I find it concerning when the CDC announces that on average one person kills themselves every 40 seconds. So we start having all of these events to 'stop suicide!' but as soon as suicide month is over no one could care less.
I have a friend who has had someone close to them kill herself. My friend was at another friend's house when this happened. Their mom came and picked them up and told them in the pouring rain that the woman they treasured was gone due to her own hand. My friend shouldn't get upset when suicide month comes up because maybe if they had known the signs sooner their aunt still might be alive.
Trigger warning: if you or someone you love has thoughts of suicide call the number below.
As Susan Sterling once said, "Even if those who take their own lives feel they have no choice--indeed, they often tragically believe their family and friends will be better off without them--the death rarely appears inevitable to those left behind. Feelings of anger and guilt and abandonment invade them, as if love should or could have prevented what happened. Survivors relive, over and over, the last days and months, even years, before the suicide, seeing now the signs that were missed, which they believe they should have recognized."
Trigger warning, trigger warning, trigger warning.
