It was only 7:34 in the morning when I asked my mom.
"Mama why are you crying..?"
I asked my mother while I hugged onto her, her tears falling though her fingers onto the floor while her long black hair covered her face, there was a note on the floor that I couldn't read, I could tell though that the writer of that note was my dad.
"D.. daddy mi.. might.. not.. come.."
My dear down mother's words trailed off into sobs while she fell onto our hardwood floor and began hugging me, I didn't ask her what she meant yet didn't know, I didn't want to make her tears to fall down quicker than they already were and comforted her. She had told me to leave her alone and I did, she left to her room a bit went by and I went to go check on her, sure I was 4 but often I copied the things my dad did when she was feeling bad. I made sure to ask if she was hungry. She laid on her bed, covered in the light blue covers with dandelions facing the window in her puff sleeved seasick green dress. her pillow was stained with tears, she said she was so I went go go cook for her, her favorite meal only to realize we were out of rabbit meat for the pasta, I'm to young to hunt and barely knew anything about hunting. I grabbed some coins off the table and yelled to my mom I was heading into town.
I headed to the butcher's, he wasn't there but his wife was, she was devastated, I didn't understand why, almost everyone seemed devastated. I asked her for the meat and what was wrong, she said her husband has gone to war.
"Did your dad go to war?"
She asked me with a depressed tone.
"War? What's that?'
I didn't understand what war was, I wasn't ever taught what it was today was a day I found a meaning of it.
"A war is.. a war is something you sacrifice your life for. It's a fight you put your own life in danger for others or you can be fighting for your life though something you're facing."
Her tone didn't really change, I didn't fully know what it meant I didn't even know what death was. I went on with my day and said that I hope her husband and my daddy would come home real soon and paid her. There was a stage in the town center used for stuff on the daily I was passing it and stopped when I heard a familiar name, one use for that stage was for death call, first part was of those who got on death row and what for, the second was who was killed by death row, the third was people whom died from natural causes or from others and their killer's status, the last was the people who took their lives from the last call yet I didn't know, it was near the end of the last part when I heard.
"Gabby Jester!'
That was the name belonged my mom's friend, my best friend's mother and my teacher. I began walking again after I heard that name, there must of been at least 10000 names called for the last call. I was wondering why, why I had heard her name. I walked home and saw some kids going to school, saw some beggars but I wasn't able to give them any money since I spent it all, when I got back my mom was out of her room her cheeks were stained by tears while her eyes were red I set the meat down onto a cutting board.
"how was the butcher?"
Her voice was kinda raspy and seemed drained.
"He wasn't there, his wife was, she said he went to war,"
"Baby, I think it's time I teach you what death is."
And so she taught me what death was, all the words and taught me what it means when someone takes their own life. As soon as it clicked I began crying. I cried because of my teacher and for my best friend, Mrs. Jester had died, I began feeling so bad.. she was gonna have a baby, I wonder how her husband was gonna hold up with two deaths.
"Valley, why are you crying?"
I couldn't tell her through my sobs and hicks. I just hugged her tightly as I tried to tell her but my own words were drowned out by my crying. She picked me up to hold me better and patted my back trying to get me to sleep, after my crying was better I wasn't crying so hard but my jaw was sore, my throat was dry. Randomly the phone began ringing, my mom answered it, it was Rocky, Gabby's husband. They talked a little then out of no where she asked me if I was fine with Liv coming over. I nodded since my throat was still sore and not yet had I gotten something to drink she was making me some milk and apple slices. She told me that they'd be here in 15 minutes, I was excited that Liv was coming over I tried to wolf down my apple slices but I couldn't because one of my teeth hurt yet I tried my best to and I tried to chug my milk and my mom reminded me that I would get a tummy ache so I didn't possibly throw up. I ate and Liv finally came, Rocky and my mother spoke for a bit of a while while Liv and I joyfully played. I saw him give to her a white envelope.
