I feel like a not-so-happy ending today so here's the prompt I'm using. 'AU where Steve never takes off the mask, never finds out it's Bucky and kills him, only realizing his mistake after it's to late.' Spoiler alert: this one will be a two-part ficlet, this one is mainly just the action sequence on the highway in word for. But I love the way it turned out.

"That is a terrible, terrible ide-" Sitwell was cut off by a loud thump on the roof of the car. Steve, Natasha, Sam, and Jasper all looked up -briefly in Sam's case, who reverted his eyes back to the road- to see where the noise'd come from. Suddenly something was reaching inside the car, breaking a window in the process, and yanking on the Hydra agent's blazer. It looked like an arm to Steve, of course, that was ignoring the fact that it flashed like metal in the afternoon sun.

And suddenly, Sitwell was out of the car. He'd been flung by whatever'd caught him, across the cement traffic dividers, and into the course of passing yellow truck. Then there was a black covered pushing from the ledge of the emptied space the window was and the click of a gun sounded faintly over the roar of traffic.

Steve watched Natasha follow the sound, a look of recognition and fear in her eyes. There was something she wasn't telling Steve. He could only assume that this was the secretive Winter Soldier, for she'd had the exact same look in her eyes when she'd told him about the Hydra asset earlier. It was almost ironic, how much commotion this must be causing when she'd clearly told him earlier that he was 'practically a ghost'.

There were two loud bangs as the assassin shot through the roof of the car at Natasha, whom grunted with effort as she climbed on top of Steve and into the passenger's seat. He shifted over to make room, and none to soon. Because the moment his head was off the headrest of the seat a bullet shot into the car and tore the foam piece in half.

Gritting his teeth, Steve grabbed the gear stick and shifted the car into park, causing the 'incredible' Winter Soldier to go tumbling off the roof and onto the road in front of them. What surely should've killed an average man didn't seem to bother him, as he simply dug his metallic fingers into the pavement to slow his momentum and stood slowly, miraculously not even causing a stutter in passing traffic.

Steve took in the whole image of the soldier. He was clad with black leather, covering every inch except his right hand and exposed metal arm. Slung across him were sheath after sheath, filled with weapons of all kinds. The long, scruffy, brown hair reminded Steve of someone that he couldn't find a name for and the intimidating black mask he wore made Steve wonder 'how the hell is he breathing?'.

Right as Natasha pulled out her pistol and aimed a black jeep came roaring up behind them, smashing the backside of the car and sending them forwards like a hood ornament for the most-likely-Hydra vehicle, causing Nat to drop he gun.

In probably one of the scariest yet coolest moves Steve'd ever seen a villain do the Winter Soldier flipped onto the car as it came barreling towards him. He used his metal hand to grip the hood as his heavy, combat boot covered came crashing through the rear window. Sam tried to break, again, but to no avail.

Natasha began searching the floor of the car for her gun when suddenly, almost out of nowhere the soldier's metal arm came crashing through the front window, grabbed the steering wheel, and pulled it straight out of both the car and Sam's hands. Steve heard his new comrade curse loudly as Natasha shot a bullet through the roof.

Finally, the car was released from the jeep's hold over it and began speeding away. . . Until it was rammed int he tail once more and did a 180 spin into the cement dividers. Steve quickly gripped his shield, Natasha, and Sam before shouting "Hang on!" And jumping out the car door, landing on the shield safely as the car went flying. Somewhere along the way he'd dropped Sam, however the other man didn't seem to look to beat up.

And suddenly there was a missile.

Steve had just enough time to push Natasha out of the way and lift his shield before the weapon hit it's target and sent him flying over the walls of the road and onto the street below it, smashing straight through a bus, thankfully not hitting anyone in the process.

A small fight continued on the ground level between Steve and a handful of the Hydra agents. However, it was over quickly and Steve quickly found himself running in between Natasha and the Winter Soldier, whom had a heavy gun pointed right at her.

He'd seen the two of them fighting together briefly and was absolutely astounded at the synchronicity put behind it. Each seemed to be able to predict the other's movement before they made the move itself. And, seeing the two so close together, Steve was baffled at how similar the styles were. It was as if they'd been taught by the same person.*

He didn't get much of a chance to dwell on that, though, because the minute he was in range the assassin's metal fist hammered into his shield. At some point during the gun fight with Nat he must've removed his goggles, giving Steve an even clearer view of the monstrous man. Yet somehow, those sullen blue eyes looked familiar.

With a kick, the soldier moved Steve's shield out of the way, halting his train of thoughts and sending him flying backwards from a well placed kick to the chest. He barely had time to take cover before bullets were being shot at him and he darted in quickly.

A swift punch knocked the Hydra agent's head to the right, but when Steve made an attempt at using the shield to knock his head again the metal arm shot out and caught it. He dropped his gun and punched Steve twice, once in the gut and again in the face before twisting the shield, causing the captain to flip in the air and lose possession of his precious weapon.

Something about seeing him with the shield made Steve desperately try to match face and name. It all looked so familiar, yet so different at the same time. Not to mention that the Winter Soldier used the shield well, as if he'd used it many times before.

Taking a running start, Steve attempted to get in close, only to have the other man throw his shield like a frisbee, lodging it into a muddy green van. He didn't have time to retrieve it, though, because the soldier was already coming at him again, this time with a small hunting dagger. Something Howard'd said to him, back in the 1940's, rang back to him. Hydra's not gonna attack you with a pocket knife. Kind of ironic, now that he thought about it.

Finally, Steve managed to land a blow, causing the soldier to fly back into a light blue truck. Not wasting time, Steve sprinted to him, forcing his knee into the other man's chin. More punches were thrown, the Winter Soldier was briefly on the ground, and one of the two was kicked in the side. But somehow the meta hand found it's way to Steve's neck and tightening. After winding up he was launched over the hood of the truck and tumbled onto the pavement again.

Even more punches were thrown, none landing on either super soldier, until Steve was pressed against the green van, a new black knife at his throat. He managed to dodge it as it impaled the fine paint and ducked to grab his shield, turning and holding it in front of his face just in time to block a metal-armed-punch.

The fight continued like this until Sam, in his falcon suit, flew in, hitting the Winter Soldier to the side and Natasha launched a missile at a car next to him. Just like that, he was gone.

~~~Okay. I'm proud of me for this. 1,300+ words, and all fight scene?! I understand that this might be a little boring to some readers but it's my first long, good fight scene that doesn't involve impossible time manipulations where the character is suddenly on the opposite side of the person they were fighting then they were a second ago. I'll try and get the second part up as soon as I can, but, until then, Stay Sparkly --SparkeWolf~~~
* If you've read the other one shot you'll know that Nat and the Winter Soldier dated. What you might not have known is that he was one of her trainers in the Red Room (which is basically where she learned to be a Black Widow) so I thought it would be a nice little reference to that if they fought int he same style.
