Chapter 9
I remember running through the woods, this was the very next day. Ben was right behind me, I know because he kept telling me not to look back and to run faster. Gabriel had found us again. Ben doesn't know how he did but he says he's taking us somewhere safe.
"That building up ahead!" He shouts from behind me.
I get in the building and he is right behind me, he closes locks the door then starts saying something. I can't make it out, when he's done he walks calmly over to me.
"You ok?" I nod and we both stand there panting from the long run.
"How did he find us?" I asked still out of breath and gulping air. He shrugs and wraps his arms around me.
"Holy crap you're freezing, come on." He leads me to what looks to be the back of the cabin. He opens a door to show a huge bedroom and right in the middle is a bed big enough at least for four people. He walks over pulls back the covers and I crawl in. It's really warm for the rest of the house being so cold.
"Thanks, Ben." He walks over to the other side and lays face up on top of the covers. He puts his hands behind his head and just stares at the celling. "What you thinking about?" I asked him quietly. He turns his head to where he is looking at me, then he speaks just as quietly as I did.
"How I'm going to keep you safe." I admit I was a bit taken aback, I wasn't expecting him to be that honest.
"Why?" Was all that came out of my mouth.
"Why am I keeping you safe?" I nod. "Because it's my job." He turns his head right as he says this and continues looking at the celling. I don't believe him but I let it drop.
"Do you like babysitting a nobody?" I Propped myself on my elbow and he spins around. He sits up and pulls me up with him, having a hold on my upper arms he looks me dead in the eyes.
"You are not a nobody, you mean something to somebody. Don't you ever forget that Angel do you understand me? You mean a lot of things to a lot of people."
"Yes for one I'm irresponsible, two I'm a joke, three I'm too honest for my own good. Do you want me to continue I have a whole lot more where that came from?"
"Irresponsible?" He asks.
"Yeah you know when someone is-"
"I know what it means Angel I'm wondering how you are irresponsible." He slowly loosens his grip but doesn't remove his hands from my arms.
"Yes I let my brother come out here, away from family and safety and I brought him out here. Now he's dead and that makes me irresponsible." I don't know whether I'm angry or just sad.
