"Here" She huffs after a second, throwing cash at him "My life savings"

Rafe leans down to pick up the cash but he stumbles and I roll my eyes at him, yanking him up.

"Oh, shit" He curses.

"Sit down" I order in annoyance "I'll get it"

He sits down again and I crouch down, picking up the scattered twenty dollar bills. I then stand up and hand them to him, letting him count the cash.

"I'll pay you back" Rafe assures his little sister.

"Whenever" She nods.

I sit down on the table, frowning as Rafe starts to tear up and look over at his sister who is staring out at the water.

"I know this looks really bad right now and everything, but..." He drawls off sadly "Like, I'm gonna- I'm gonna get my shit together, okay? Like, I will. I'm gonna get it tight, like, you know. Real tight"

Wheezie smiles warmly, nodding at her big brother and I place my hand on the boy's knee, squeezing it gently.

"You'll see" He adds.

"I better get going" She tells him, grabbing her bag and he nods.

The girl enters the house and I pat Rafe's leg before getting up, catching up with Wheezie as she reaches the front yard.

"Hey, Lou!" I holler and she stops, turning to me "He really is trying his best"

"I know" She nods.

"He's got a lot going on right now" I tell her.

"I understand that. Thank you, Addy" She says sincerely.

"For what?" I smile in confusion.

"For staying" She elaborates "No one ever stays with him this long"

"Their loss, I guess" I shrug.

"I like you, Adelaide. I hope you and Rafe work out" The young girl smiles at me.

"Me too" I sigh.

I'm laying sideways on an armchair on the balcony getting high and listening to music when Rafe storms in from napping, looking pissed.

"You left me" He complains, taking two of my pills from the orange bottle and swallowing them.

"I couldn't sleep" I hum, throwing my head back and whistling to the music.

"How high are you?" He asks.

"I'm on cloud nine" I answer, reaching out to tug him towards me.

"Don't" He snaps and I giggle, feeling nothing but fuzzy.

"Sorry, Mr Grumpy" I coo, stand up and pinching his cheek.

He grabs my wrist tightly and I squeal in pain, stumbling forward.

"I said don't, Adelaide" He growls, dropping my arm.

I snatch my arm away from him with a glare and look down at the discoloured skin.

"What the fuck is your problem?" I spit in anger.

"I'm gonna sort my shit out. I don't want you messed up in it" He tells me and I frown in confusion.

"What shit?" I question.

He leans forward and gently takes the wrist that he hurt, rubbing his thumb over the red skin.

"You know I'll take care of you, right?" He says and I nod "Good"

He leans down and presses his lips to mine for merely two seconds, leaving me with a pout.

"Are you okay?" I ask in concern.

"I'm fine. I've just got shit to do" He explains vaguely "I'll see you later"

"Later" I mumble as he walks into the house.

Getting a bad feeling in my gut, I pull on my shoes and my shorts, tucking Rafe's polo shirt into the front of them as I follow after the boy himself.

I follow him all the way to the airstrip, my confusion growing more and more by every turn he makes. I watch from a couple meters away as the boy pulls out a gun and my heart drops. He rounds the plane we're both standing behind and pulls the trigger, making me flinch in shock. I hear gasps, letting me know there is more than one person there.

"Rafe, no" A familiar voice says as I slowly round the plane.

My eyes meet the chocolate pair of John Booker Routledge before flickering down to Sarah Cameron in his arms, Ward Cameron with handcuffs on one wrist and Sheriff Peterkin on the ground bleeding.

"Adelaide?" John B questions in confusion.

Rafe turns around at the sound of my name and he looks at me in surprise, his eyes widening.

"What have you done?" I snap.
