Ever since Izuku was little, he was told that he was "Their Rainbow Baby". Inko and Hisashi Midoryia had wanted a child for years. Doctor after doctor telling Inko it's just not in the cards for them. When Inko finally became pregnant, they were overjoyed. After years of waiting, Izuku was born at 4:52 am on July fifteenth.
He was healthy if not slightly chubby. The new parents rejoiced while cradling him in a honey yellow blanket.
As the years went on, Izuku became a healthy toddler, the baby fat slowly working its way out of his features as he grew. By the time he was four, he was 1'10". Only three inches shorter than Kacchan!
Then Hisashi and Inko took him to the doctors one afternoon, where he was going to learn what his quirk was so he could be a hero with Kacchan!
The three drove back to their apartment crying.
Izuku was quirkless but as his dad told him on the way out as his mother fumbled for her keys;
"Little Zu, Quirkless doesn't mean worthless! You can be whatever you want to be as long as you put your mind to it!"
And Izuku believed him with all of his broken four year old heart.
When they arrived home, Inko and Hisashi set Izuku on the kitchen counter in the corner, his step stool beneath him. Izuku watched from his spot as his parents worked in harmony to make his favorite meal- Katsudon!
"Thank you Mama, Papa! I wanna be just like you when I grow up!" Izuku cheered as his mother plated their meals.
"You can be anything you want and do whatever you want Zuku, you just gotta believe in yourself and know we're with you no matter what." And if the family sat at the couch and ate while watching a Disney movie nobody called them out on it.
Izuku was five when he was picked up from school early. He didn't mind because the kids were pushing him around. He scraped his knees on the ground, so they were bleeding too. Izuku only grinned at his mom who gave a shaky smile back as they made their way to the car where she buckled him in and began driving them somewhere.
"Hey Izuku?" Her voice was quiet but hearing his real name after being called "Deku" all day was nice.
"Yeah momma?" It was so innocent and the last time it would sound as such.
"Your papa got hurt today and we don't know if he's going to be okay. Do you wanna say hi and try to make him feel a little better?" Izuku's confused but excited nod drew a calming breath from his mother as they parked in what seemed to be a fancy hospital. 'Maybe it was a na-tio-nal hospital instead of a reg-io-nal one!' Izuku thought about breaking the words up as his momma had taught him.
When they entered and checked in, Izuku wrinkled his nose in disgust. The smell of disinfectant and medicine made him feel ill.
After a long walk, they got to his father's room. After opening the door, Izuku could see his father, who was propped up and wore a sad smile on his face. He beckoned Izuku over, and the boy quickly climbed into his papa's lap.
"Hey buddy, wh-what happened to your knees?" Hisashi barely made out with a raspy voice.
"The- the um kids at school were pushing me around calling me Deku again. I told a teacher but they only told me that boys will be boys and to stop whining" Izuku didn't lie to his papa or mama not about what he couldn't control.
"T-thats okay buddy. Remember what I said?" The man asked as Inko joined the two on the bed.
"Quirkless doesn't mean worthless. Deku might be read as worthless but that doesn't mean you are! You're Deku which means you can do it!" His father and mother recited beside the boy who shyly looked up again.
"One day papa imma be a hero! Deku the Worthless hero! To show everyone that quirkless doesn't mean worthless and You can do it!" Izuku said excitedly before yawning.
"Aw my bunny tired?" With a nod Izuku curled into his dad's side, minding how he prefers the right over left.
"I love you bunny, don't forget you can do it" was the last thing Izuku heard his Papa say before falling deep asleep.
The next morning Hisashi Midoryia passed in his sleep from a spinal injury and a bullet to the chest. He died peacefully, leaving a single mother and a young boy with the passion to make his late father proud.
Izuku and Inko were close as they recovered and grieved their loss. Eventually they moved on. But they both wore lockets with his ashes inside around their necks so he would always be with them.
When Izuku turned 7, Inko grew worried. He would come home with faux smiles and deliberately covered up skin. He would flinch at loud noises on the TV and if startled would nearly scream, curling into himself. Inko, however, didn't pry. She knew Izuku has a hard time opening up about what exactly happens at his school but she trusted him to tell her if he thought something was big enough to be worrisome. Shaking her thoughts away Inko restarted where she was making Soba for dinner and scrolling through rentable movies to watch as they ate.
In Izuku's second week of middle school, he came home in tears covered in bruises, burns and cuts. Immediately, he broke down to Inko, crying about the bullying and suicide threat he had gotten within the first few days of the school year.
Inko gently comforted Izuku before taking him to the bathroom and treating his wounds.
That night Inko decided that it was time for Izuku to know what exactly her job was. But first, the couch cuddles in their pj's. After breakfast they can discuss what they plan to do.
