Personality:
Alcyone tends to be very polite around people she doesn't know, often biting her tongue whenever her temper could potentially flare up so as to not draw any attention to herself. She prefers to stay out of other people's conflicts just because she's already in enough trouble on her own without having to add someone else's drama to it. She gets really passionate about protecting the environment (for very obvious reasons) and can often find herself talking about her passions, though whenever she realizes it she goes quiet suddenly, always an embarrassed blush on her cheeks as she mutters an apology. She is naturally very curious, which often works against her, especially because she wants to keep a low profile. If she feels her efforts may be wasted with someone, she'll simply go quiet, unwilling to waste her time and energy on arguing with someone who won't change.

Likes:
• Literally anything to do with the ocean: the sea life, swimming, and fishing just to name a few
•Learning about and exploring the surface world
•Despite her initial polite closed-offness, she loves talking with people and getting to know them, as well as helping them if she's able to
•The human family she's been staying with as well as the new friends she's made during her time on the surface
•Looking up at the stars and learning about space (often wondering why in her mermaid form it looks like she has matching constellations on her skin)

Dislikes:
•Pollution, with every fiber of her being
•Especially really hot days, mostly if she can't go swimming in order to cool off
•Having to hide what she is, which means she can't go swimming much unless its somewhere secluded
•Getting in trouble for things out of her control
•The reason why she's on the surface

Backstory:
Originally from a mermaid city hidden at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, Alcyone was next in line to become the Priestess of the Kraken, an ancient being her people worshipped as a god and would tell them to stay away from the blue waters and the surface world. Right before her initiation, she discovered that by becoming the Priestess, her original self would be wiped away just like her grandmother before her, her mother having just been able to escape the "honor" by having her and then dying after giving birth to her. Refusing to accept such a fate, Alcyone committed the greatest crime known to her people: she swam up to the surface, just barely escaping the guards sent after her.

Unbeknownst to her, there was a terrible storm waging on the surface above, that combined with the sudden lightness of the lack of pressure she was used to at the bottom of the ocean, she found herself getting slammed against a ship, getting knocked out before getting swept away by the ocean currents and storm.

When she finally came to, she was in a strange place she came to learn of as a house. Apparently a fisherman had found her and decided to bring her home, as she had somehow changed to look like a normal human teenager, and he was worried about her being seriously hurt. Luckily his wife was a doctor and was able to treat the cuts on Alcyone as a result of her rough journey. Alcyone feigned complete ignorance, the humans that found her just assuming that she had amnesia due to the head wounds she had and had no idea what anything was as a result.

They ended up taking care of her, teaching her how to speak and read in the span of two years, Alcyone only ever conveniently remembering her name after she learned how to say it in human speak. Since no one ever came looking for her, the human couple decided to adopt her because she looked so young. However, once she got hang of being human, she began wanting to explore the surface world she was now essentially exiled to.

However, she can't help but feel like the Kraken is still after her every time she swims in the ocean, and as a result has only started swimming in pools or in the secluded anchialine caves she lives next to. She tends to not swim much anyway, as while she can stop herself from transforming back into her mermaid form, it takes a considerable amount of energy for her to do so, so she'd rather avoid it unless she's alone.

Strengths:
She's an incredibly strong swimmer due to swimming all her life. She can pick up on how to act or do things by watching people, as well as learn new languages by listening to them long enough (only to speak though, it takes her a long time to learn how to read other languages).

Weaknesses:
Some parts of human culture still eludes her, including double entendres and figures of speech (though she is studying them in her spare time!). She is also not as independent as she wishes she could be, sharing an apartment with a friend she ended up making that lived next to her human parents before moving away. She gets very weak whenever she doesn't drink enough water or when it's incredibly hot out. She also tends to panic in dangerous situations, not always thinking things through as her immediate instinct is to leave as soon as possible.

Powers:
Alcyone can create invisible barriers or force fields to protect herself. She can manipulate water (and to some extent, human blood) even though she must be able to see what she is manipulating in order to do so. She can also produce bright flashes of light, often light purples or magentas in color, in order to blind and incapacitate enemies. She had a staff that helped her focus and increase her powers, however she lost in when she became unconscious in the storm that brought her to the humans who took her in. She can also communicate with sea animals.

Other:
Sometimes she has nightmares that feel real of her grandmother sending guards to the surface to bring her back or of the Kraken trying to take over her mind.
