Smile and Bleed

This day just keeps going...

    "Care to join us Ms. Green?" Mr. Masters asked from behind his desk.

    "Sorry, I won't be late again." My alarm didn't go off this morning. I'm usually here on time.

    "Since this is your first tardy, I'll let you off with a warning. Next time you owe me a ten page letter adressing to the class of why it is important to arrive in the classroom on time. You've missed notes for today and homework is on the board." he cleared his throat and adressed everyone else, "Get back to work, if you have any questions, look in your text book."

    For a moment I stood there, then I walked to my usual seat. Next to it sat someone I haven't seen before. I paused just for a second and sat down opening my textbook.

    "Hey, I'm new here. My name is Dante Glass." the guy sitting next to me said.

I took a good look at him for a moment. His hair is long and black; his eyes are a smokey gray blue; and he's the only one in the room wearing all black. He stood out like a sore thumb.

    "My name is Liz Green." I replied.

    "Do you want to copy my notes? The homework is a little tough to do without an explanation."

    "Sure, thank you."

    Dante slid his notebook over and I took it.

     I opened it and copied the first few lines into my own notebook when he said, "So do you like it here?"

    "It's okay I guess. I like the feel of the city."

    He looked at the clock and asked, "What time is lunch?"

    I stopped writing and looked up at him. "It's ten in the morning. How could you possibly be hungry already?" he shrugged. "Don't you have a bell time schedule with you?"

    "Oh, you know what? I might of left them in my other pants." he said patting around his pockets.

    I laughed and got a glare from Mr. Masters. Clearing my throat I said, "Mr. Masters isn't a funny man. Let's get back to work before we do essays until we graduate."

    "But I like humor and pestering teachers. It's a great combo." he said in a mock- whiny voice.

    I got a third of the notes down when my roommate walked over to say, "Hey, sorry, I accidently turned off the alarm clock. I had an assignment to take care of." Jesse is an assasin born from an assasin family. The reason I know this is because she talks in her sleep. I assume that she had a target to take care of last night.

   "It's no problem. Yoy gotta do what you gotta do."

   "Right, so who's this?"

    "This is Dante Glass. Dante, meet my roommate Jesse Diaz."

    I finished the notes and handed them back to Dante. "Thank you for letting me copy your notes."

    "Anytime, Hey, I know this cafe a few blocks away. Want to go get some coffee sometime?"

    "I don't like coffee."

    "Okay, how about tea?"

    "Make it a sweet tea and you"re buying and you've got yourself a date."

    "What kind of man would I be if I didn't buy for the lady?"

    "True." I laughed.

    "If you'll excuse me, I'll be gagging over there." Jesse said walking away.

    We both laughed and the bell rang.

    "I have a free period, do you want to just walk around the city? We could go to that cafe and get lunch early."

    "It's ten in the morning. I think if we ate it would be considered breakfast." My stomach growled right then. In my rush to get out of the dorm house and get to class I didn't eat anything.

    "It'll be a brunch then. You sound like you need it anyway."

    I sighed. "You aren't going to let this go are you?" He shook his head. "Fine, lets go."

    He smiled and led me onto the sidewalk that surronded the campus.

    During this time of day, the city is busy with cars filling the road and pedestrians walking among each other. A few homeless and some musicians set up at spots around the area asking for money. Dante gave loose change to everyone of the beggers when we passed them by. He didn't give them small pocket change either.

    A little ways down the block I said, "That's so nice what you did."

    "I believe in doing good things for self-satisfaction. It gives them hope when others won't lend it to them."
