Disclaimer: Just in general very dark. Nothing triggering though.
Life was shit. Everything was going downhill, and awfully dark thoughts ran through your head all day long. It was draining. And at that very moment you decided it; one little visit wouldn't hurt anyone, would it? You had convinced yourself no one would find out, and so nobody would get mad at you. You could just sit on the back, silently having a smoke, listening to people talk about their own miserable lives to somehow fulfill the void in yours.
However, the so-called one little visit, quickly turned into weekly ones, that turned into daily ones. Some days you would even assist to two completely different support groups. It was becoming a bit of an issue for you. True, you weren't in the slightest happier than before your teeny obsession started, you just had something occupying your mind, people who were quite literally to die at any moment now, surrounding you, tragic past stories and mortal illnesses. It was the closest you were to death, without dying yourself. It was a hopeless attempt to embrace life, to feel actually alive.
You loved to sit there, dark eyes intensely staring into every one of the present individual's souls. Wondering all kind of things about their privatest of the lives. You knew this was not right. You knew this whole faking diseases to change the way you felt about yourself was sick and twisted as the very least. But you couldn't help it, after all, who the bloody fuck cares? Nobody would expose you since, you supposed, there would be no other being with such an aberrant wit to even consider the possibility.
But things never stay the same.
"This is cancer, right?" As soon as those words left her plump lips, you took off your sunglasses to have a better look. Never have you ever seen someone so bewitching, and attractive, but overall, so intriguing. You had just met the brunette yet you already felt strangely bond to her. You were longing to get to know her better. It was a crave.
"Now, let's ready ourselves for guided meditation. You're standing at the entrance of your cave. You step inside your cave, and you walk. Deeper into your cave as you walk, you feel the healing energy of this place all around you. Now find your power animal... Ok, let's partner up. Pick someone special to you tonight."
This was your chance. The perfect opportunity, you just had to talk with her, or at least exchange some kind of greeting. Yes, that was the perfect excuse to try and get closer to the stunner of a woman only a few steps away from you.
"Hey there" You breathed out the moment you found yourself standing right in front of her, slowly taking off your sunglasses once again, mesmerised.
"Hiya" A slight smirk making itself noticeable.
"I'm Y/N and I guess I don't need to say why am I here, do I now?" You said, in a neutral, almost bored tone. You were just too used to it by now. The whole 'Hello, I am terribly ill, could I cry against your sweaty tits?' thing. That was the very same line you have been using for god knows how long. It was always the same routine, and even though you tried not to talk or interact a lot, they were usually far too enthusiastic when it came to get to know each other. At first, you had tried to make it sound more real, the brows furrow and grief-stricken voice, for everyone to be as certain as they could be about your fatal clinical state. But now? Now it was just another part of your day, an habit. Whenever someone assisted for the first time, you'd introduce yourself like that, to then try to stay as offstage as possible. You felt bad enough for doing what you were doing, there was just no space for more lying around.
"Yeah" She said lighting a cigarette, and signalling for you to do so if you'd wish, which you obliged. "Yeah... there's actually no need. I know why you are here, you little shammer."
"Excuse me? What exactly do you mean?" You replied with, the words leisurely spilling from your mouth, exhaling a chalky cloud of smoke through your nose. Truth to be told, your heart was pounding, and yet you tried to seem undisturbed, there was just no way- No, absolutely no way and nothing to worry about.
"You are not dying" She simply said, squinty eyes intensely staring into your soul, smoke coming out of her parted lips, almost as intoxicating as the chick herself.
"We're all dying in our own way"
"All right, come together. Let yourselves cry."
"True. We are just not dying the way Chloe back there is dying" She muttered, embracing you.
Soft little weeps could be heard now. You couldn't believe it; the bloody tourist.
"Ya know, I've seen you. Saw you at breast cancer, saw you at tuberculosis, saw you at melanoma, at testicular cancer. Why do you do it?" She whispered.
"Well, I can freely screw my lungs while I sit there and listen to people share with creepy looking strangers their doomed medical conditions. Truly lovely, don't you think? Now, why do you do it?"
"It's cheaper than a movie, and there's free coffee"
You scoffed.
Was she for real?
"Of course you do. I just- when people think you're dying, they really, really listen to you instead of..."
"Instead of just waiting for their turn to speak."
"Mhm, yeah."
"Share yourself... completely"
"By the way, I'm Marla" She said, muffling her face on your neck and repeatedly kissing it, before parting herself from the clasp and puffing at her cigarette, seductively blowing the fog on your face. Haggard eyes fixed on yours, a small smirk making its way onto her osseous face.
"Very well, that's gonna have to be all for today, Thank you for coming!"
"Now, I suppose we are partners in lie. When, or rather where, will I see you again?" You asked, eager to spend as much time as possible in her company.
"You tell me"
"How about your bed?" You half-joked, the both of you chuckling at your own cheekiness.
"Looks like this is a goodbye, see you around Y/n" She concluded, seconds before turning around, clumsily making her way to the doorway.
"Marla wait! Maybe we should exchange numbers"
"Sure"
And that's exactly how you met Marla Singer. The big tourist. The very same girl who had managed to destroy your entire life as you acknowledged it just to build it up once more. The one who would actively haunt your all type of dreams. A strong mix of low-priced perfume and smoke. A liar. But oh boy how dearly you loved her... because, in the long run, she could be a lot of things, but she would always be the enthralling woman you'd choose all over again.
