Start from the beginning
                                    

You will see the Save private key as a box with my_private_key.ppk file in it.

a. Ignore my_private_key.ppk file. Type in my_putty.PPK into the File name - field 

b. Click Saves 

You will see the PuTTY Key Generator interface. 

13. Select the Public key text displayed inside the Public key for pasting into OpenSSH authorized_keys file - box 

14. Copy the Public key into your clipboard 

15. Go back to your hosting CPanel > SSH/Shell Access 

16. In the Upload SSH key section paste the Public key you just copied into the Public Key (DSA or RSA bigger than 2048 bits only): text area Click Upload 

17. The key you uploaded has been greatly added to your account! message. 

a. Click Go Back 

b. From your Window Start menu launch Pageant 

c. Click Add Key

a. Select my_putty.ppk file 

b. Click Open 

You will see the Pageant - Enter the passphrase prompt box. 

18. Enter the passphrase you began planning your Private key at the origin of this process 

19. Click OK 

You will now see the key inserted inside the Pageant Key List.

a. Close this Pageant window.

Step 2 - Connect to Your Site over SSH with PuTTY

1. Download Putty and Start menu to launch PuTTY.

2. Click Session.

3. Enter <your hosting username>@<your_site_domain> into the Hostname (or IP address) field. Make sure in the Connection type -section the SSH radio button is selected

4. Under the Connection tab, click on the + sign next to SSH 

5. Click Auth.

You will see the Options for managing the SSH authentication window. 

6. Click Browse.

You will see the Select private key file window. 

7. Select my_putty.ppk file 

8. Click Open 

9. Click Open once again 

You will now see the PuTTY command line monitor, matching the one in the image below.
