Darren Andrews and Anna Harris have been friends since kindergarten. They grew up together. She was his next door neighbor, his best friend, and his secret crush. He finally let his feelings out homecoming night of his sophomore year. She told him that she had felt the same for a long time. The only thing they had in their way was that Anna was a junior. She had skipped 4th grade due to her outstanding intellectual capacity. That was one of the saddest days of young Darren's life. But one exceeded them all.
The day Anna left for college. She had been gone the whole summer in Ohio where she took theatre camp and helped out her grandma with her restaurant. She came back the day before school started to pack her things and only told her parents this. The next day she got up early in the misty, foggy morning and flew out to Florida. She left Darren a note, but it wasn't the same as saying goodbye in person. He ripped the note into four halves and then shredded them. He had some hurt feelings.
But now senior year couldn't be better. He had straight A's, student council president, class president, and star of the basketball team. He and his best friends Emily and Taylor were closer than ever before. And he had the British foreign exchange student Jane Potts as his partner in History during culture week. He lived with his father Alex and his sister Pepper. His mother Elisa lived in a town three hours away. He visited her on breaks and stayed a month with her in the summer. She was as excited about him going to college as he was. It was a bit strange actually. She was a super college nerd. He planned on attending NYU and getting a degree in English literature. He had always had a passion to write. One of his favorite things to write about were his times with Anna. He hadn't seen her in over two and a half months. He always wondered what she was up to.
Well, 976.2 miles away in Miami, Florida, Anna was about to take a wild ride. She and a bunch of kids from her school had planned to have a party. Of course they were going to bring beer, even though they were underage and it wasn't allowed in the dorms. The whole dorm was filled with partying. Anna decided to go crazy and get herself drunk.. The next day everyone took their beer and went back in their rooms, all except Anna. Anna was passed out in the hallway with a beer can in hand. Her dorm advisor caught her. She was taken down to the dean's office to receive her punishment. "Ms. Harris, you know we don't allow drinking in the dorms and you're one of our best students. What happened?" Dean Holland asked. "I guess I wanted to go a little crazy..." Anna said ashamed of herself. "I'm sorry, Anna, but you know the penalty for drinking in the dorms. You are here by kicked out of the school," Dean Holland said straight up. Anna held back her tears and turned to gather her things from her dorm. She piled everything into her tiny little car, drove to the nearest gas station and cried. What would her parents think? Would they even let her come back home? How could she be so stupid!? Then she thought of a solution. Someone who has always helped her no matter what. Darren Andrews.
