cubes

the cube

the library is my favorate place, its so quiet and comforting, thousands of peoples knowlage and stories compressed into a small building. my library wasnt very big, i live in a pretty small town so there isnt much need for a big library.

so just like i have done thousands of times before i got on the bus towards the library.

as i sat down i noticed something by my feet, a well worn rubik's cube, i picked it up and turned it over in my hands, it was unusually heavy and it was already scrambled. slowly i turn a face and im suprised by how smooth it turns before locking into its new position.

i look up and panic. I almost missed my stop, i quickly press the red button and here a soft bell ring before the screeching of breaks, i climb out of my seat and out the door, pocketing the cube.

i smile and look at the old building, its just a converted village hall but its comforting either way, i step through the door and wave at Ava the librarian.

she smiles softly and greets me as usual, "welcom back steven" Ava sighs. my name isnt steven, its stanley and she should know that, but since she's so old i dont think too far into it.

i begin wandering between the shelves the wooden floorboards creaking with every step, as i do my hand falls to the cube in my pocket. i begin turning it, feeling it spin and lock into place with every new combination.

i must have been daydreaming, because i didnt see the girl till i had fallen right on top of her, "sorry!" i blurted out before scrambleing to help her to her feet, she laughed a little.

"dont sweat it, i didnt even see you until we fell, its like you came out of nowhere" i lean down to pick up my cube off the red carpeted floor "im stella by the way" she said with a smile, i quickly grabbed the cube and got back to my feet, "stanley, mines stanley" i stutter on those words, i suddenly felt exreamly anxious and uncomfortable, i knew something wasnt right.
