"Y/N L/N," began Waller. "Codename... Punchline."
You sighed.
"That's not my codename."
"It's the only one we have on file. What is your codename, then?"
"I don't have one. Unlike the rest of you, I don't run around in a spandex suit and call myself a stupid name."
Waller shook her head, deciding to ignore you.
"Let's have a look at your personal file... shall we?"
She clicked a button on the remote she held, the projector flashing still images of your life.
"You used to have a pretty good life, huh? Before the Joker stepped in."
"He kidnapped me."
"To replace the recently-liberated Harley Quinn, right? He made you a littlecrazy. Couldn't quite edge you over to the other side, though, so you escaped - and tried to kill him by blowing up his secret hideout."
"Yeah. That didn't work out so well for me, in case you forgot."
"Well, you did end up killing several hundred civilians. Even if it was only an accident - some supervillain you are."
You sighed.
"What'd you call me in for, Waller? If you don't mind, I'd like to get back to my cell. Might as well - I'm gonna die there."
"What if I told you I had a way out?"
You cocked your head to the side.
"...I'm listening."
...
"No, no, absolutely not-"
You paced around your cell, fuming.
How dare Waller offer that to you - she knew you didn't want to hurt anyone! Much less be part of Task Force X, AKA the Suicide Squad. You'd die on the first mission, easy.
You glanced up to see a man punching in the code to your cell and walking in. You should've felt panicked - maybe Waller had sent him to intimidate you - but you felt too exhausted to care.
"Hi, Y/N," he said. "I'm Colonel Rick Flag."
"I recognize you," you managed, and you did. "You were the one who arrested me."
"Yeah, I'm kind of an expert in the 'Joker' department - I had to meet the girl who almost killed him."
You almost smiled. He gestured at your cot.
"...Mind if I sit?"
You shook your head, sitting beside him.
"So, Waller- she mentioned she was interested in recruiting you-"
"I'm going to roundhouse kick that bitch - will you try to stop me?"
He shook his head, stifling a laugh.
"I wouldn't recommend it - but, no, I wouldn't stop you, either."
You sighed.
"Have you even considered it-"
"No."
"Look, L/N, please-"
"I said no. I mean it-"
"...Did you know that I run Task Force X?"
You hadn't known.
"Is it a good job?" you asked, jokingly. "Easy?"
"Not really, no. I have to try to get a bunch of costumed psychopaths in line. I'm more of a kindergarten teacher than anything - which is kinda why I'd hoped you'd join us."
"Why me?"
He shrugged.
"You're normal. You seem like the kinda person I'd get along with. The other ones, they're soldiers. Pawns. But you, you could be something else, like... a partner."
You swallowed.
"I can't promise that you wouldn't get hurt. Or maybe even be killed. But Waller's willing to take ten years off your sentence for every mission you run, so - think about it, okay?"
He stood up.
"...I could use a little sanity in my life, y'know?"
A smile quirked at the edge of your lips.
"Yeah, well, there's a chance you might be in the wrong business, Flag."
He smiled.
"Yeah. Maybe so."
