The next day, I woke up, cleaned myself over, and headed out the door, not expecting anything new.
I stepped outside to admire the beautiful sunrise, before being interrupted by Pete, the delivery bird in his town. Pete was always a cool guy, I can't say he sees me as a friend, but he certainly doesn't hate me like everyone else.
"It's yours, mayor!" Pete says as he shoved the letter inside my mailbox, and waved goodbye. "It looked important, at least on the outside!"
"Thank you!" I said back. It would be a lie to say that I was thrilled to check the contents of my mailbox each morning. I only got two, no...three types of letters, my mother's, complaints from others, and my house bill. One of the three, and occasionally an invitation to the local hot dog eating contest.
I opened my mailbox and pulled the letter out, it only took me a glance before realizing that it certainly didn't belong to my mother. Before I could shove it in the trash, I looked at it one more time to make sure that it wasn't a bill of some sort, I would be in deep trouble if I threw away a bill.
As I examined the outside of the letter, nowhere does it say the word Nook, but one thing did catch my eye, the sealing wax on the letter, it was a symbol. The symbol was a crosshair, with a shorter overlap point between the two lines. I didn't get it at first, not knowing what it was. But suddenly, something clicked in my head as the image of last night's television popped into my head, Super Smash Bros. That's it! IT'S THE SMASH SYMBOL! I said in my head, this couldn't possibly be true, no way! Did Toon Link read his fan mail from me? I ripped the letter open, to a single page of paper that readout:
Hello! This is the Super Smash Bros Organization and we are pleased to inform you, Villager, that you have been chosen to be the 45th member of our family. We are terribly sorry to have reached out to you this late into the hype and hope you can understand. Since you have not reached the age of consent, we ask for a signature of a parent or guardian. Once again, we are so excited to have you as our first Animal Crossing representative and hope you can be the gateway to many other future fighters. Good luck, and we will patiently await your response.
Reggie Fils-Aime - Chairman Masahiro Sakurai - Kirby's dad
I was stunned, this really cannot be real, what is happening? I darted for the town hall, and busted the door open, to find Isabelle doing her usual routine, I think she was a little frightened by my sudden appearance.
"Woah there hedgehog, where ya headin? Smash bros?" She asked, she knew I would get the reference since she knew I liked the show.
"Well, apparently, yes," I said while catching my breath. "Take a look at this! This has to be a mistake, I...can't do this."
I handed the letter over to her paws, I watched her as she read the letter, a little by little more perplexed as she read through the letter. She held the letter for a good 2 minutes before giving it back to me.
"You have to do this Villager." She said as she grabbed my hand and then gave it a painful squeeze. Man, she does it hard.
"I can't abandon you like that. Where am I even gonna go."
"This is a never-before opportunity that you have to take Villa, for you, for me, and the sake of Animal Crossing as a game. Nintendo has finally acknowledged our existence!"
"I know, but..." I was nervous and confused. "Why did this come to me, and like, not you? Or anyone else?"
"It doesn't matter, I'm so proud of you Villa."
"Then, how would I get the signature? I can't reach my parents with this."
"I'll do it for her." She said. "I'm your legal guardian."
"Should I tell my mother first about this whole thing?"
"She'll understand, I'm sure she will."
Isabelle Signed the paper with her paws, then I signed my part with my terrifyingly bad handwriting. After that, I gave the letter back to the post office. I was still in shock about the whole thing.
During the next few days, I waited patiently for something to happen. No one contacted me back, and no letter came to me. They couldn't have missed my letter, could they?
It was not until the sixth day, that a helicopter landed on the edge of the town, the helicopter had a huge symbol on it, the same symbol as the one on the letter. A man came down from the helicopter, I instantly recognized his face from the town hall. Reggie.
Reggie was a handsome guy, he was the chairman of the tournaments and an iconic figure in internet culture. I mean who doesn't know who he is? Isabelle and I conversed with him briefly before being noted that I was leaving today and that it would be a good time to say my goodbyes.
"Now?" Isabelle said. "I better get the residents here, this is big news!"
Soon, I was in the middle of the town plaza, with the entire city of Smashville around me, and their angry faces. All I'm hoping is that no one comes up and knocks me out with a pitchfork or something. I quickly spoke about how honored I was to represent the game as a whole and how much I enjoyed serving as their mayor, which was an absolute lie obviously. After the speech, I was told to pack everything I needed in 30 minutes before we take off, to a different world.
I really didn't have many things to pack, aside from my clothes and my everyday items like my toothbrush. I also took some photos and some other personal items with me, including the doll, which soon proved to be a fatal mistake.
I came out with a half-empty suitcase, and followed Reggie up to the helicopter, before I took off, I gave Isabelle a huge hug that lasted minutes and left promises that I would write to her every week. And by that note, I was off, away from my home, towards a new world.
During the ride on the helicopter, I showered Reggie with questions about the games. Most were simple conversation starters with no exact purpose aside from taking away awkwardness, but one question, in particular, was probably my biggest concern.
"Why was I chosen?" I asked. "I have no clue how to fight, and, ya know, pretty weak. I'm sure there are many others better than me."
"If you think fighting is the only part of the tournament, you cannot be more wrong. You see, our mission is to entertain the people and fans of Nintendo with familiar faces, not get a bunch of people together and see them beat each other up. That's the boxing channel on Wii Sports, we are nothing like them." Reggie said with a smile.
"Nobody knows who I am though. I'm just a random kid living his life in the world."
"People will, young villager, they will. The fans will soon get to know you, then they will know who you are."
"How will I fit in in such a community itself?" I asked. "What if people don't like me?"
"I'm sure you'll fit in great, it's a big community, and surely there are people you'll get along with."
"Hopefully," I said. Will I really fit in? The question suddenly scared me, what if nobody liked the person I was, would I be kicked out? Or treated the same way I was at my home?"
"Your wit, and your personality, are unparalleled." He said. "Really, Villager, you have qualities that even I can learn from. You have nothing to worry about."
"Never in my life have I imagined someone like you complimenting me in a way like this," I said shyly as I blushed a little bit. It was normal when I received compliments.
"For someone with a passion like you, learning how to fight would be a cakewalk. Plus, I think you have an untouched fighting spirit inside you, I can feel it. You are a special boy, and I know it." Reggie said. "We are almost to our destination."
A new life awaited me, and I was excited and eager to see what it had in store for me.
