"What have we got?" A tall brunette woman asked as she fought her way through the quickly falling snow to the helicopter. Her white coat blended in with the white-out around her. Even on the roof of the hospital, the snow blew around viciously and a chill was sent through her bones.
"Morgan Ashford, seven years old. We were called to the scene of a car crash and found her in critical condition. BP is one thirty over eighty, severe injuries to the head and we found glass stuck in her abdomen." The helicopter medic informed the other doctors as they lifted the young girl out from the Flight for Life carrier.
The woman nodded and looked her over. The little girl had blood and tiny snowflakes staining her dark blonde hair, and her brown eyes were alert, frantically looking around. An oxygen mask had been placed over her face, and blood was soaking through the gray sweater she wore. As they began to roll her inside, the woman put a hand over hers and looked at her.
"Morgan, I'm Doctor Hamarman. You're going to be okay, sweetheart." Doctor Hamarman smiled briefly at Morgan and then looked at the helicopter medic. "Do we know what happened to her parents?"
"Her mothers were sent to the University of Minnesota Hospital Center. Other than that, we have no knowledge of their condition or their status." The medic replied as they got Morgan into a treatment room in the emergency department.
"That's okay. Let's get a bag of fluids hung, x-ray of her lower abdomen, and order a head CT." Doctor Hamarman looked at a nurse and then back at her team. "Move her on my count. One, two, three."
The medics in the room lifted Morgan and set her on the hospital bed. Some nurses began hooking her up to various monitors and started an IV line, while a radiologist set an x-ray over Morgan's abdomen.
"Clear." She said, making everyone back up to the walls while she captured the image. Doctor Hamarman looked at the image and swore under her breath.
"The glass is causing bleeding into her stomach. We need to get her up for surgery immediately."
Morgan looked around, terrified and in shock. Her vision was bright and she could only make out shapes close to her. Her breathing was slowing, enough to feel herself slipping away. She didn't want to go, she had to stay. She was all her mothers had left after her twin was born stillborn. Morgan kept trying to fight, but it was as if there was a force preventing her from doing so.
"I want my moms." Morgan whispered.
Doctor Hamarman looked at her, "What was that, sweetie?"
"I want my...." Morgan felt her breath give way. She closed her eyes, unable to fight any longer. She could hear alarms ringing from her heart monitor, but even that was fading too.
"Start compressions and charge to two hundred."
There was a pressure on her chest, but Morgan still couldn't find it in her to breathe. It was as if it was all stolen from her. And she couldn't get it back.
"Clear."
A shock was delivered to her heart, but Morgan couldn't feel it. She panicked, wondering if she would ever see her mothers again, her school friends, anything on Earth. Everything went black and cold as she heard Doctor Hamarman say, "Asystole. Time of death, 17:31."
