Chapter One - Fate and Fortune

My name is Raven and this morning I turned seventeen.  I was currently home alone seeing as right after my birthday morning celebratory pancakes my parents had to leave for a business trip.  I didn’t mind though...I love being home alone.

See I was always the freaky loner girl who loved animals until one day I met my best friend.  Her name is Abby.  She is a spunky, musical, sport loving blonde who lives back in the United States...I am currently living in Brazil though so I couldn’t spend my day with her.

My parents are...wealthy, to say the least. When I told them about the bullying that was happening in my old high school, we packed up and moved to my favorite place in the world; Brazil.

I loved the rain and the forests and the animals and the heat.  I loved everything about this place.  Now I was sitting on my patio surrounded by my jungle friends.  There was Tuci the toucan, too many frogs to count, lizards, colorful flocks of birds in the trees and my panther who was sitting across the lawn.

You may be wondering why all of these animals are here and why aren’t they afraid of me?  Well to be honest I don’t have any clue either.  Animals have always seemed to love me.  But my favorite animal who has ever taken a liking to me was my panther.  I never named him like I had for many of the other animals who came around.  It didn’t feel right to give him a name.

His presence was always so regal.  His sleek black body was muscular, with large gold eyes piercing as if he could see into my soul. Long black whiskers would twitch in attention to all of the movements of the jungle.  But one thing that puzzled me was that he would never come any closer than the edge of the forest.

Sometimes I would take my sketch pad out and draw him.  He was an amazing subject to draw.  My favorite sketch of him though was where he was sitting on a rock with his paws crossed and head held high.  This creature was amazing.

I walked back into my room and hopped on my bed and flicked on the t.v. That guy Jack whats-his-face (From My past is following my and my celebrity boyfriend) was on mtv talking about his new girlfriend...boring...I switched the channel and watched some reruns of bones while talking to Abby on the phone.  She wished me a happy birthday and we hung up.

    Thats when I heard it...

    Gunshots...

I looked out my window to see my panther charging out of the jungle and across my yard...

I ran and threw open the door to my room.  I saw him hesitate a second but ran full speed ahead into my room at the sound of the pursuing footsteps gaining on him.

He leapt into my room and I quickly shut and locked the door.  I then ran around the house shutting and locking all of the windows and doors that I had opened earlier to let in the cooling post thunderstorm breeze.

You may be asking yourself how locking doors and windows would keep guys with guns out of my house so I will tell you why...You see my parents are over protective and since I am their only child they wanted me to be as safe as possible so they had any windows, doors, air vents, etc. bullet proof.  Yeah... bullet proof...

This was the first and hopefully last time I would have to be grateful for my parents tendencies to obsess about my safety.  Now back to what I was saying before...

When I finished locking everything I ran back to my room and locked its door.  I closed all of the curtains on my windows and the floor to celling drapes that covered the door out to my patio.  I saw my panther sitting in the corner of my room so I decided to do the same thing.

Clack, Clack, Clack.

The sound of bullets ricocheting off the windows made me jump and run to huddle in the corner of my room.  I forced myself to keep my eyes open just in case I needed to get out of there when I noticed a large black obstacle in my line of vision to the door.

My panther had placed himself in front of me as if protecting me.  His font legs spread shoulder width apart and his chest out as if he could take on the world.  He looked so brave and majestic.  I saw his stance start to relax.  That was when I noticed that the gunshots had stopped.  I had been so focused on how close my panther was and how amazing he was to even notice that they had stopped.  I was safe...  Thats when something in me snapped.  I couldn’t hold it in any longer.

I threw my arms around his neck and sobbed into my panthers shoulder.  At first he stiffened but soon relaxed as if he were comforted by my touch.  After I cried my last tear I dragged my exhausted body to my bed.  I climbed under a thin blanket and patted the end of my bed.  When I did this I could have sworn I saw him grin but it might have just been my sleep deprived mind playing tricks on me...  He jumped up and curled up on the edge of my bed.

That is how I feel asleep on the night of my seventeenth birthday...tired after an assault with deadly weapons and with a panther asleep and purring at the end of my bed.
