I trudged out of the reading classroom a few hours later, ready for lunch.
"I'm pretty sure I'm dead..." I said to myself, shoving a dollar into the slot of a vending machine. I slammed in a number on the semi-active number pad, choosing a somewhat edible sandwich. Picking it up out of the collection slot, I hightailed it into the cafeteria, trying to get a good seat.
I sat down, unwrapping the small triangle of nutrients. Great, it's moldy. Oh well, I can always just eat around it, right? I started tearing off small pieces, wrapping them into the plastic covering. I gulped down any fear of food poisoning, and ate it. Horrible tasting, but sensible for a vending machine's offspring.
Finishing off the rest of the grotesque sandwich, I see Jace sauntering in with Seth and another boy. What's with this new boy train? They all sat down at my table, huddling together. "Hey guys.." I called out, confused. Jace looks up to me and smiles. "There's another new kid, dudette! His name is Xavier. Says he can play drums okay, so we might be able to recruit him." he beams, patting Xavier on the back. Xavier shrinks away, leaning towards Seth, who's laughing softly. The poor guy looks traumatized, but I don't blame him.
After lunch, I lead all the boys into an old rec room, where Jace and my guitars lay.
"Hey, we're gonna practice..." I stall, looking around. "If it's not your thing, you can kick it out in the hallway, man."
I pick up my ax, and strum out a solid F. I test out a few other chords, tampering with the tabs as it deemed fit
"Okay, follow up, Jace. This is gonna be fun." I say flatly. I started strumming haphazardly, trying to get a feeling of the guitar I hadn't held in days. I played out the beginning of "Therefore, You and Me", and he followed up pretty well. We laid it out, our voices silently singing along to the only song i really didn't care to learn nicely.
