"What happened?" You whispered. Connor looked at his lap before sighing.
"I don't even really know. I went to the park, swallowed a bottle of pills, closed my eyes, and didn't expect to open them again. But I did. I woke up. I woke up in my bed and could hear my parents talking. They seemed angry but that wasn't what was weird. What was weird was the fact that when I went to go talk to my mom, she didn't acknowledge me. I talked to her but she couldn't hear me. I thought it was a joke but when I got frustrated and tried to leave, I just ended up back in my room. Every time I tried to leave I ended up right back here."
"After days of this, I realized that I was a ghost. There's no other explanation. No one sees me, I can't leave. It's the only thing that makes sense."
"But if you're a ghost, wouldn't you haunt the park? And how come I'm able to see you?" You felt like an idiot, saying something like that. Connor shrugged and laid down.
"I did some digging, and I found an article on this woman who claimed to see ghosts. She said that they haunt not the places they died, but the places and things they're most attached to. And that they're the ones who choose who sees them. I've been experimenting with that. My mom keeps thinking she's going insane." Connor said with a quiet laugh. It was cruel, but you couldn't help but laugh with him.
You adjusted your position and placed a hand on his face, making him look at you. His skin was just as pale as you remember and his eyes were the same shade of brown they were when you last looked into them.
"It really is you, huh?" You asked quietly. Connor gave a small smile.
"Yeah." He replied. You felt your eyes began to sting with tears, and you broke down. You wrapped your arms around his torso and let your sobs shake your body. Connor hesitated slightly before wrapping his arms around you in return.
"You can only come back if you felt unfulfilled, your soul becomes attached to something that meant a lot to you. It's strong enough to pull you back, but not enough to have your body back. You're stuck in a weird in-between. It's like taking a back seat to life."
"What brought you back? Do you know?" You asked. Connor pulled away before sighing and standing up.
"I'm not sure, but if I could give it a logical guess, I'd say this." He said before shuffling through a pile of shoe boxes. He got to the one at the bottom and handed it to you. You raised your eyebrows but opened it when he nodded at you.
In the corner of the shoebox was a beaded bracelet. You didn't recognize it at first glance, but when you picked it up, you knew exactly where it was from. On the bracelet was your name, the letters colorful and mismatched, and on either side was an assortment of black beads on a black string. and right where the tie was, there was a heart. You knew what this was because you had one exactly like it, the only difference being the name spelled in the middle. On this one it says (Y/n), but the one on your wrist read Connor.
"I thought you threw this away?" You asked quietly. Connor sat down next to you.
"That's what I told you. I've kept it in that shoebox ever since though. It meant a lot to me, especially seeing you still wear yours even after you thought I threw mine away. That's really the only thing that could've meant enough." He replied. You looked at your wrist and slipped the bracelet off. You held the two together before giving a sad smile.
"I never thought I'd see these bracelets together again." You whispered. Connor looked away.
"Why?" You asked, your question barely audible.
"What?" Connor asked. Fresh tears formed in your eyes.
"Why did you do it?" You asked and placed the bracelets on the bed.
