chapter xi

"I figured you might want these," she said, handing them over quickly. "Heard you're still good with a bow." Tiago busied himself slinging the quiver over his shoulder and readying an arrow. "I'd love to see if that's true. Look, practice. Right there." Tiago looked up and saw a WCKD soldier moving toward them. He raised and fired unthinking; the arrow landed straight in the soldier's neck. He let out the breath he didn't know he'd been holding, glancing at Belle. She raised her eyebrows. "You've gotten better."

Tiago rolled his eyes, then turned on his heel. He had to find Newt.

It didn't take long. The blond was huddled behind a contained with Frypan and Thomas. When he searched a little longer, he saw Jorge just in front of them, and Minho firing a gun just in front of him. Tiago could see a soldier approaching Minho from the left. He quickly loaded up another arrow and shot it. It flew just behind Minho's head, catching the soldier in the forearm and sending his gun flying. Tiago didn't waste time loading up another arrow while he made his way towards Jorge as quickly as possible.

"Tiago!" Jorge cried out when he made eye contact with the younger boy. "I thought you were dead!"

Tiago let out a short, loud laugh. "You taught me everything I know," he shouted over the noise of gunfire. "If I'm dead, what the hell does that make you?"

Jorge barked out his own laugh, clapping Tiago on the shoulder. He used his other hand to fire at a soldier behind Tiago. "Watch the kids," he instructed, shoving Tiago in the direction of the container three of the boys were crouching behind. Tiago hurried over, quickly sniping a soldier who was approaching them from behind. He crouched down behind them, reaching for another arrow on his back.

"Tiago," he heard Newt say, and then a hand on his back. Tiago turned his head slightly, his eyes still focused on loading up his arrow.

"I thought I told you not to die," Tiago said. "Then you try to sacrifice yourself, and for what? Some greater good?" He raised his head to look at Newt. The blond's eyes were wide, his jaw hanging open slightly. Tiago managed a smirk. "You're dumber than I expected if you thought I was gonna let you kill yourself. Who would I make-out with then?" He fired his arrow again; it landed in a soldier's back.

"Minho!" Thomas suddenly shouted out. Tiago wanted to look, but he couldn't take his eyes of the enemies coming at them from behind. He fired another arrow. He heard Thomas continue to yell Minho's name, and then he felt the hand leave his back. That made him turn.

Tiago saw Thomas being restrained by Jorge, Newt and Frypan on his sides. Tiago rose from his crouch, looking past Jorge. He saw Minho being dragged by two WCKD soldiers, towards the Berg. His breath caught in his throat, but he didn't have any more time to think about it because Jorge was shoving Thomas back towards him. Tiago shoved his bow across his shoulder as quickly as he could, then reached out and grabbed Thomas' arm. Newt and Frypan rushed past him, on their way up to the small ridge behind them. Tiago continued to yank on Thomas' arm. He felt Newt's grip on his own arm, tugging him upwards. They reached the ridge, where Tiago saw Brenda. He immediately let go of Thomas in favor of rushing to hug his sister. He could hear the Berg taking off behind him, but he didn't let go of Brenda. He buried his face in her shoulder, clenching his eyes shut to prevent tears from falling. He felt her hand on the back of his head, soothing down his scalp.

"I killed someone," he whispered, his voice distraught. For some reason, the only thing he could think about now was the boy he'd shot. "Brenda, I shot someone, someone innocent, I―"
