"Is this all of them?" she asked, her voice incredibly soft for someone who wanted to harm people.
"Most of them," the old man answered. There was a pause. "It'll be enough."
"Start loading them in," she commanded. There was movement immediately.
"Okay, you heard," the old man said loudly. "Let's get 'em on!"
Then people were being hauled up from their spots. A few loud shouts escaped people's throats. Tiago was only paying attention to the woman, who beckoned Thomas forward with one hand. A soldier shoved him up, launching him in front of her. She spoke a few words, and then Teresa appeared beside her. Tiago frowned in confusion for a few beats, and then he realized.
"You've gotta be kidding me," he grumbled to himself. He couldn't hear their conversation, but he could read a lot of it from Teresa's facial expressions; she was the only one without her back turned to him. He could guess that the others were visibly upset, because Teresa seemed to be stressing out as her eyes flicked between all of their faces.
Tiago was hauled to his feet. He wanted to say something to the soldier who had his wrists trapped, but he bit his tongue in fear that he'd get hit. He could hear the woman in white's voice getting louder, but the talking around him was still too loud. Apparently the doctor in front of him could hear her, because she spoke next.
"More blood," she said loudly, to gain the woman in white's attention.
"Hello Mary," the old woman said, her voice becoming colder than when Tiago had first heard it. He narrowed his eyes at her. "I'd hoped we'd meet again. I'm sorry it had to be under these circumstances."
"I'm sorry about a lot of things too," Mary said, "but not this. At least my conscience is clear."
There was a pause, and then the old woman in white said, "So is mine." And then a gunshot.
Tiago flinched reflexively, clenching his eyes shut. When he opened them, he immediately sought out Newt; he was being held by Minho, which Tiago was thankful for because he knew the blond would've come to him. The next thing Tiago registered was Vince's frantic voice.
"Mary? Mary ... Mary! Mary!" He shoved the soldier restraining him. "Get off me!"
As he looked, Tiago saw the blood staining the back of Mary's white shirt. He felt a hand on his arm. He turned and met eyes with his mother. His breath hitched. He'd forgotten all about her. His wide eyes followed her as she made her way towards her friend. Vince had taken Mary into his arms, falling to the ground. He was still screaming. It pained Tiago to hear the obvious hurt in his voice.
"Come on, Janson. Load them up. Let's go, all these people! Get rid of them. Let's go, let's go!"
Vince was yanked to his feet again, and Tiago saw his mother grabbed by another soldier. He almost had the heart to step forward and grab her himself, but then he was being pushed forward. Automatically he turned to face the soldier, but before he could say or do anything, Tiago heard Thomas shouting.
"Get back! Get back, everyone stand back!"
Tiago turned again and saw what Thomas had in his hand; the bomb that Jorge had given him earlier. Tiago immediately stepped back like he'd been told. Thomas kept yelling, and the old man―Janson―was quickly telling his men to hold their fire.
