Standing at five foot ten, David was pretty average in appearance. A shaggy mop of black hair topped his head, which hid his green eyes most of the time. Coming from a poor family, David was a miner. It was all he could do, besides play chess, but playing chess rather well didn't make you much money in the town he lived in. His family struggled to feed themselves since his dad left, so it was up to him to bring money home to pay for food. It had just passed his nineteenth birthday, and he was down in the mine with Seth, a childhood friend.
"So, Seth, what's the chance that we find a whole load of diamonds and don't have to mine anymore?"
"I'd say very slim. Besides, even if we found diamonds, they'd be taken from us by the company, or just stolen by another miner. I hate to say it bud, but we'll never really make it big. Live without too much hassle maybe, but I wouldn't get my hopes up."
David let his hair cover his face and kept swinging his pick at the rocks.
"But there has to be more." muttered David "at least, more than this. I can't live like this forever."
David looked up at Seth, whom was just about to speak, when suddenly the mine was torn open and the ground behind them was replaced by a meteorite about the size of two people. A hole opened up in the ground next to Seth. As the dust settled, David looked around frantically.
"Holy shit, Seth, what the fuck wa-"
"Shh"
"What? wh-"
"Shut up. I can hear something."
Seth looked down into the hole that had opened up and saw a bubbling green liquid. Seth turned towards David.
"David, come look at this, there's some weird shit down here, I've never seen anyth-"
A large, black claw gripped the stomach of Seth from behind and threw him across the small cavern. The pick-axe he had been clutching tumbled from his grip.
"Seth! Are you okay?!"
A large, glaring pair of red eyes emerged from the hole, followed by the rest of the creature. It was nothing like anything David had seen before. It was bipedal, and stood at about twice the height of him. It had two great hands that had six claws on each, and was entirely black. It pounced onto Seth and finished him with a swipe to the face. David raised his pick-axe above his head and swung it upon the creature. It didn't even flinch. The head of the pick-axe flew off towards the hole and the wooden handle shattered. As the creature turned towards him, David flung himself towards the remainder of the pick-axe, and scrambled to grab it. He didn't even notice that it had begun to glow green when he turned back to the creature.
