She awoke as if waking from a nightmare. Sweaty, heart beating, body shaking. She sat up and surveyed her surroundings. She was in a forest. Why was she in a forest? She couldn't remember. Actually, she couldn't remember anything. Come to think of it, what was her name? She couldn't remember. How could someone forget their own name? She stood up, her clothes torn and covered in grass stains. The sky was dim, and the foliage around her blocked whatever sunlight tried to reach her. Wait a second... had she done this before? She searched her pockets, searching for anything to make sense of what was happening. Nothing. She surveyed her surroundings. She looked in one specific direction. Something was missing. She began making her way back to the... what was it again? She kept feeling constant flashes of Deja Vu, feeling like this has happened before. She eventually came to a road. Wait, this isn't supposed to be here. Oddly enough, there were no street lights. Why did it matter? She couldn't tell you.
She began to walk along the road, hoping it would lead her somewhere. It seemed like it was fall, the trees were turning orange and yellow. A beautiful sight, but it wasn't gonna answer any of her questions, so she kept walking. And she kept walking. And walking. And walking. Finally, she came upon something new: a tunnel carved through a large hill. Hopefully, this would lead her to somewhere other than the forest. The walls of the tunnel were made of concrete, though slightly stained and weathered over time. The tunnel was dark. The only light was the light leaking in from either side of the tunnels. The overhead lights were off. Why were they off? It didn't make sense. Even if it was daytime, the tunnel was still dark. So why were the lights off? Maybe the road was closed and it would be a waste of electricity to keep the lights on. It would make sense, as there had been no cars driving past the entire time she had been walking the road. She looked ahead of her, she was nearly out of the tunnel.
When she emerged from the tunnel, she saw a small suburban town. Finally, civilization. She noticed that there were cones blocking the entrance to the road that led to the tunnel. Looks like I was right. She slipped through the cones and continued walking. She came to a small shop. Inside, a frail old lady sits at the front desk. The lady notices her standing at the door. "Come in!" The lady called. She didn't want to be rude, so she entered. "So what brings you here?"
"I-" wait... she could talk?! "I'm new here and I'm a little lost," she tried to keep her cool, but she could talk again! Why was it so important that she could talk? Deja Vu again...
"Oh, well in that case..." the lady pulls out a map of the town and sets it down on the counter. "Here, on the house."
"Wait, I can have this for free?" She asks.
"Of course! Don't worry, I've got plenty more!" says the lady.
"Thank you so much, ma'am," she says, running out of the shop.
"Have a nice day!" The lady calls.
Now that she had a map, she could navigate her way around the town. But where would she go? She surveyed the map for somewhere she could go. The Police Department! Maybe they can help find out what happened to her. It wasn't too far away either, so she began to make her way towards the station. On her way, she began to recall some of what had happened earlier. A nightmare. She has a nightmare where she couldn't speak. That's why she was relieved when she could talk. And why she immediately knew the direction of the road. It makes sense now... somewhat... The details were still a bit hazy, but she knew the basic bits of it. She remembered her name: Alyssa... wait, what was her last name again? It wasn't too important.
She came to an intersection. She knew the police station was directly ahead, but why did she feel the need to go the other way. Was there something down there? It was another of those gut feelings, and she wasn't about to ignore it. Last time it lead her to the road, so hopefully, this time would help her as well. She took a left and continued to walk. She surveyed the surrounding area. Searching for whatever she felt was here. Something is here, something important. She eventually came to a halt. She looked at the sidewalk. A black stain. She stepped back to get a better look at the scene. There was a black stain on the concrete, right underneath a bench. Behind the bench was a bush, or what used to be one. Its leaves were all withered and decayed. Above it all, a light pole. Again, a light pole seems to be important. But how? It's just a light pole.
Alyssa sat down on the bench. She pondered what she should do. What is the importance of a light pole?! She looked up at the beautiful afternoon sky. The sun was about to set. It truly was a beautiful sight. Suddenly, a light gust of wind blew through the town. It was calming, a little too calming. Alyssa began to feel drowsy. Her mind began to clear. Soon enough, she had fallen asleep on the bench.
She awoke as if waking from a nightmare. Wait... no, not again. She bolted up and surveyed the surrounding area. She was in the forest. But something was off. She looked in the direction that the dim light from the light pole had been, but the dim light was brighter. The light pole had moved closer. She ran towards it. No doubt about it, it had moved closer. But how? Nightmare logic, that's probably how. Out of nowhere, she felt something graze her back. She bolted around, but nothing. Suddenly she was dragged to the ground. The strange faceless figure had gotten her. The man pulled out a knife, holding it to her neck. He began to cut, nice and slowly, making the pain last. She tried to scream, but she couldn't. Her neck was being cut by the strange man. Please. Wake up. Wake up WAKE U-
She awoke, gasping for air. She looked around, she was back on the bench. She felt her neck. It was perfectly fine. Even though it was just a nightmare, it felt so real. The pain didn't wake her like it normally should. She took a moment to collect herself, then she stood up. It was morning now. She needed to find that police station, now.
