Hailey’s P.O.V:

Now it was Sunday.  My first day at my new school was tomorrow.

My mom and I set out early to buy stuff for the house.  We went to Pottery Barn,  Raymour and Flanigan, and Williams Sonoma.

After we bought everything we needed, my mom took me out to the huge mall they had here in Omaha to buy some new clothes and accessories for school tomorrow.

We ate in the mall’s food court and didn’t get home until 6:30. We also went grocery shopping as well.

When we got home,  I helped my mom set up the beds, and organize the new furniture and kitchen utensils and machines, and put all the new food away.  Then, I sat down on the sofa with my mom to watch a movie.

As we got into The Book Thief, the front doorbell rang.  I looked at the clock.  It was almost 9:00.

“Who could be ringing the bell this late?”  My mom asked me.  “I don’t know, but I’ll get it.”

I stood up and walked to the door.  I unlocked it and swung it open.  A boy who looked about my age stood there.

He had brown hair and brown eyes, and a couple pimples dotted across his face. He was wearing a black short sleeved T-shirt and mesh shorts, a gray snapback hat, and basketball sneakers. To be honest, he was very attractive.  And I mean very.

“Can I help you?”  I asked.

I looked closer in the dark and saw that he was holding a silver tray of something covered in tinfoil.

“Hey, I’m Sammy Wilkinson, you can call me Sammy or Sam, whatever you want. I live next door.”  He said.

I remembered the loud boys that piled out of the house next to ours yesterday.

“Oh right, I think I saw you and a couple of your friends yesterday.” I remarked.

 Sammy stared at me.

“Well, my mom uh, didn’t feel good, so she um, wanted me to bring these brownies over...to welcome you to Omaha.” He held out the tray.

 I smiled slightly.

“Well thanks, Sammy. Tell your mom we said thank you.”

He nodded, and I set them on the little table by the front door.

“So do you go to Westside?”  I asked, and when I looked up, Sammy was gone.

I stepped outside and looked all around.  Sammy was nowhere to be found.

I sighed and walked back into our house, bringing the tray of brownies into the kitchen.

“Who was at the door?”   My mom called.

I set the tray of brownies on the counter.  “Just the kid from next door.  He sent over some brownies.  Want to cut into them?”

My mom grinned and went over to the freezer, pulling out some Friendly’s vanilla ice cream.  “What about I make some hot brownie sundaes to celebrate our new start?”

I gave her a thumbs up and unwrapped the brownies. As soon as I opened them, I screamed.

The whole brownie tray was filled with live worms

. I pushed the tray back in horror, almost dropping it.

My mom looked at the tray and rolled her eyes.

“Teenage boys these days.”  She grumbled, then walked away.

This sudden feeling of rage hit me like a tidal wave.

I don’t even know why I was so angry

.  I grabbed the tray and walked outside.

I headed towards Sammy’s house next door and dumped the worms all over his front stoop, throwing the tray above the filthy bugs in the process.

Then, I turned and stormed back inside.   “Hailey!  That wasn’t necessary!”  My mom scolded.

I went over to the sink to wash my hands.  “How are you not mad?  I knew that kid was trouble, I’m going to beat the shi-”

My mom held her hand up, as if to refrain me from talking.  “I’m not mad because I learned not to have a temper.  I don’t want to be like your father.”

I sighed and dried off my hands.  “You’re right, and I’m sorry.”

My mom smiled and gave me a hug.  “At least we still have this worm free ice cream!”  She said, pointing to it. I grinned and got out two spoons.

After my mom and I finished our ice cream and the movie, it was pretty late.  “I’m gonna head to bed.”  I said to my mom.  She nodded and gave me a kiss on the forehead.  “Goodnight, sweetie.”

I took a quick shower and brushed my long blond hair, then put it in braids, so it would be wavy tomorrow for my first day.   I got into bed and shut off my light.  I tried not to think about my nerves for school (even though I told my mom I wasn’t nervous) and drifted off to sleep.
